US Vice President JD Vance has described foreign workers working in America on H-1B visa as ‘bonded labour’. India has expressed strong objection to Vance’s statement. The Foreign Ministry said that immigrants have played an important role in strengthening America’s economy.

India also said that Indian professionals contribute significantly to America’s economy, new technology, research and employment. Both countries benefit from this. 71% of H-1B visa recipients in America are Indians.

Vance said – give jobs to American people instead of foreign workers

Vance accused Microsoft of misusing the visa system. He said that companies should hire American people instead of foreign employees.

According to Vance, in the last one year, Microsoft laid off 6,000 American employees, while during the same period the company got the benefit of 6,300 H-1B visas and about 3,000 green cards. He called this system shameful and called for its abolition.

Under the PERM process for a green card, the company must prove that a qualified American worker was not available for the job in question and that hiring the foreign worker would not adversely affect the wages or working conditions of American workers.

The US government has suspended 8 big IT companies from the PERM process related to Green Card. These include India’s Infosys, Tata, Wipro, HCL and Cognizant along with Microsoft, Adobe and Capgemini.

The US government alleges that companies are reducing employment opportunities for American people by hiring foreign workers.

However, the pause in PERM processing does not automatically void previously issued H-1B visas. But the employees of these companies whose green card process is going on may have to face delays. Read the full news here…
