On Saturday, a passenger bus collided with a pile of sand and overturned in the north-eastern region of Brazil. At least 17 people died in this accident, while many others are injured.
According to the police, there were about 30 passengers in the bus. The accident occurred in Sao Paulo city of Pernambuco state. The bus was headed to the town of Brumado in the nearby state of Bahia.
Officials said the driver had lost control of the bus. The bus first went in the opposite direction and hit the rocks on the roadside. After this, when the driver tried to bring the bus in the right direction, it overturned after hitting a sand dune.
Police said the bus driver suffered minor injuries and his alcohol test report was found negative. Investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
According to the Brazilian Transport Ministry, more than 10 thousand people have died in road accidents so far in the year 2024.
Earlier in April, 11 people, including two children, were killed in a bus accident in south-eastern Brazil. In February, 12 people were killed in a collision between a bus carrying university students and a truck in Sao Paulo state.
