American rock climber Alex Honnold on Sunday made history by climbing one of the world’s tallest buildings, Taiwan’s Taipei 101 (1,667 feet high) without rope, harness or any protection. This was a free solo climb, in which he had to climb alone without any outside help. Alex started climbing from a corner of the building. They moved up by placing their feet on narrow L-shaped raised places. People standing on the road below were cheering enthusiastically. After about 90 minutes (1 hour 31 minutes) of hard work, they reached the spire at the top of the building. He said, “What a view, what a wonderful day. The wind was very strong, so I was trying to keep my balance. It was amazing to see Taipei like this.” The special design of Taipei 101 presented him with the toughest challenge. In between were ‘bamboo box’ like structures, where the walls were steeply sloping and overhanging. Each of these eight sections contained eight stories of difficult climbing. The entire climb was broadcast live on Netflix, with a 10-second delay. It was postponed by a day due to rain. Alex Honnold has done many big feats before. In 2017, he climbed Yosemite’s El Capitan (3,000 feet) without a rope, on which the documentary ‘Free Solo’ was made and won an Oscar.
