Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind President Maulana Mahmood Madani has strongly condemned the statement of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Sarkaryavah Dattatreya Hosabale, in which he suggested Muslims to adopt practices like worshiping the sun, river and tree. Maulana Madani termed this as an irresponsible statement and said that it is extremely regrettable that the top leadership of the Sangh has not yet tried to understand Islam and Muslims seriously.
Maulana Madani clarified that Hindus and Muslims have been living together in this country for centuries and Muslims’ belief in Tauheed (belief in monotheism) and way of worship is not hidden from any sensible person. Yet, despite being educated people, people like Hosabale appear to be ignorant of the basics of Islam. He said that Tauheed (belief in only Allah) and Risalat (carrier of the message of Allah) are the basic pillars of Islam. One who does not believe in these two cannot remain a Muslim.
For Muslims, the country is dear, not revered: Maulana Madani
Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind The chief said, ‘Loving the soil and nature of this country, protecting it’ and ‘worshiping it’ are two completely different things. Maulana Madani further said that Indian Muslims believe in Tauheed. Inviting them to worship trees, earth, sun, sea or river besides Allah proves that the Sangh has failed to understand and explain the fundamental difference between ‘beloved’ and ‘worshipped’.
He said that Dattatreya Hosabale’s statement also raises questions on the ideological maturity of the Sangh. This shows that the RSS does not have the ability to guide the country or is not ready to take this responsibility seriously. Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind chief said, ‘Indian Muslims love this country very much, but worship only one Allah. Such statements of the Sangh hurt communal harmony and harm the unity of the country. Such statements should be avoided and religious sentiments of all communities should be respected.
Surya Namaskar non-religious and scientific: Dattatreya Hosabale
Addressing a program organized in Sant Kabir Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, Dattatreya Hosabale had linked practices like worship of rivers, trees and sun to environmental protection and physical health and said that Muslims living in India should also have no harm in adopting them. Hosabale described Surya Namaskar as non-religious and scientific and said that it will not cause any harm to Muslims.

He said, ‘If our Muslim brothers do Surya Namaskar, what is the harm in it? This does not mean that they will have to stop going to the mosque. Pranayam and Namaz should not be seen in opposition to each other. Sarkaryavah Hosabale of the RSS argued that traditions related to nature worship are part of India’s cultural heritage and can be beneficial to all communities. He said that practices like worship of rivers and trees are related to environmental protection and should not be limited to any one religion.
