The major states of North India Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh have been hit by smog and fog. According to AQI.in, an air quality index agency, till 12 noon, AQI was recorded above 400 in Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida and Faridabad.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, till 8.30 am on Wednesday, visibility in Amritsar was only 50 meters. There was no visibility beyond 100 meters in Halwara, 250 meters in Sarswa, 300 meters in Ambala and 400 meters in Chandigarh.

At the same time, zero visibility was recorded at Adampur in Punjab, Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh and Indira Gandhi Airport in Delhi. Due to this, 7 flights from Delhi to Jaipur and one to Lucknow were diverted.

It is being claimed in media reports that this layer of pollution and smog has reached North India from Lahore, Pakistan. According to Swiss air quality technology company IQAir, Lahore was the most polluted city in the world on November 12.

The air quality index (AQI) in Lahore was 429 on Tuesday afternoon, while the real-time AQI reading of 720 was recorded in one area. In satellite images taken by NASA, the clouds of dense, toxic smoke that have engulfed Lahore, Pakistan are now visible even from space.

Lahore’s smog is not natural, due to pollution

According to news agency ANI, experts say that severe pollution in Lahore cannot be considered seasonal, because dangerous smog persists even in the summer months. This haze points towards systematic environmental mismanagement. This crisis has arisen not only due to stubble burning but also due to uncontrolled vehicle emissions, old industrial practices and negligence in environmental monitoring.
