US President Donald Trump will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 24. Trump is confident that his good personal relationship with Xi will serve the US in negotiations.
But according to The Atlantic report, Xi values China’s interests more than personal relationships. Two examples of this also came to light in the last two years. In both cases, America had to step back after China’s response.
First case: Tariff
In April 2025, Trump imposed huge tariffs on goods coming from China. The objective was to put pressure on China so that it accepts America’s conditions.
China also imposed retaliatory tariffs on American goods. This started affecting trade between the two countries. Ultimately Trump had to reduce some of the tariffs he imposed.
Second case: rare earth
After this, China imposed new rules on the export of rare earths. Rare earths are metals which are used in mobiles, electric vehicles, electronics and weapons.
China is a big producer of these metals. Therefore, ban on its export could have affected the supply of raw materials for many American companies.
After this step of China, America also relaxed some export restrictions imposed on China.

difference in conversation between the two
Trump feels that his good relationship with Xi will come in handy in negotiations. Therefore, in the last one year, he himself talked to Xi on many major matters related to China. But the influence of personal relationships is less visible in Xi’s decisions. His focus remains on China’s long-term interests.
To explain this difference, the example of Xi’s old aide General Zhang Yuxia has been given in the report. The relations between the Xi and Zhang families go back decades. Both their fathers had lived together during the Chinese civil war. Four years ago, Xi had also postponed Zhang’s retirement.
Despite this, in January Xi removed Zhang from China’s top military post. The real reason for his removal was not made public. This example shows that Xi does not give priority to old personal relationships in political decisions.

Trump wants quick results, Xi waits
Trump tries to force a compromise by applying pressure early in the talks. Xi’s method is different. They can wait for a long time and increase the pressure when the time is right.

Trump will visit the airbase to welcome Jinping
Trump will not only meet Jinping on September 24, but will also personally welcome him at Andrews Air Force Base when he reaches Washington. According to Politico, this will be the first time in Trump’s second term that he will go to the airbase to welcome a foreign leader.
According to American officials, its purpose is to honor Jinping and improve the environment for talks. This is also a special sign for China, because it sends the message that Jinping should be given equal respect as the American President.
Apart from this, Trump is also organizing a state dinner for Jinping. According to Reuters, this will be only Trump’s second state dinner after becoming President. Earlier, he had organized such a dinner for Britain’s King Charles and Queen Camilla.

1. Taiwan China has been continuously putting pressure on America regarding Taiwan. Jinping has also raised the issue of American arms sales in his conversation with Trump. Trump had described the upcoming arms sale of about $14 billion to Taiwan as a negotiating card.
2. Tariffs and trade Tariffs, market access and trade balance will be a big issue between America and China. Both countries are trying to reduce tensions, but trade-related differences have not ended yet.
3. Iran and the Strait of Hormuz The issue of closure of the Strait of Hormuz during the Iran war also came up in the talks between the two leaders. Trump had said that Jinping had agreed to ask Iran to open the strait. However, China did not confirm giving any such assurance.
4. AI race Now America-China competition is not limited to just trade. Both countries are trying to gain edge in AI and advanced chips. America is banning China from providing cutting-edge semiconductor and chip making technology.
5. Soybeans and trade agreements Before Jinping’s visit, China has purchased about 1 million tons of soybean from America. This indicates an effort to stabilize trade relations between the two countries.
