NDA does not have a majority in the Rajya Sabha, but BJP is the largest party.
The budget session of the Parliament is starting from 23 July. The opposition is again making strategies to corner the government. At the same time, BJP has 86 seats in the Rajya Sabha and NDA has 101 seats including its allies. After four years, BJP’s strength has gone below 90.
On July 13, 4 nominated members of the party retired. The total number of MPs in the Rajya Sabha is 245. Currently, there are 226 MPs. The majority figure in this is 114. NDA is 13 seats short of the majority figure. If seen from this perspective, the government may face difficulty in getting the bill passed.
NDA hopes to get Rajya Sabha seats from 7 states
Elections are to be held soon on 19 vacant seats. BJP and its allies are expected to get seats from 7 states. According to NDA’s calculations, they may get 2-2 Rajya Sabha seats from Bihar, Maharashtra and Assam and 1-1 from Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Tripura.
It is believed that the 4 people who have been nominated to the Rajya Sabha will also support the government, because the government has brought them to the Upper House. Generally, nominated members in the Rajya Sabha are independent, but traditionally they support the party that has nominated them.

BJP reached from 55 to 101 in 10 years
In Rajya Sabha, BJP reached from 55 to 101 in 10 years. BJP had 55 MPs in 2014 and 78 in 2019. This number increased to 90 in June 2020. After this, the party won 11 seats. This increased the number of members to 101. This was the first time since 1990 that a party crossed the 100 mark.
19 seats in Rajya Sabha, Mathematics of vacant seats
Of the 19 seats currently vacant in the Rajya Sabha, 4 are from Jammu and Kashmir and 4 are for nominated members. The remaining 11 seats are from different states, including Assam, Bihar, Maharashtra, Haryana, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Tripura. Out of these, 10 seats have fallen vacant due to Rajya Sabha MPs contesting and winning the Lok Sabha elections.
One seat has fallen vacant after a Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) leader joined the Congress. BRS leader K Keshav Rao joined the Congress. The Election Commission has not yet announced the dates for elections on these seats.
Currently there are 7 nominated members, they are not affiliated to any party
The nominated members who retired from Rajya Sabha recently include Rakesh Sinha, Ram Shakal, Sonal Mansingh and Mahesh Jethmalani. 7 nominated members are not members of any party, that is, they are unattached members. On the recommendation of the central government, the President nominates a total of 12 members to the Rajya Sabha.
