There is big news for the passengers traveling by train. If you travel by train, now you will have to shell out more money for this. The Railway Ministry has issued a formal notification regarding the increase in train ticket fares. According to the ministry, the new fares will be effective from Friday i.e. 26 December 2025. Earlier on December 21, the decision to increase the fare was announced.
Rail travel will become expensive from December 26, notification issued
According to the report of the news agency, under the new system, no additional fee will be charged for journey up to 215 kilometers in ordinary class. However, fares will increase for journeys beyond 216 kilometres. There has been an increase of 1 paise per kilometer in ordinary class and 2 paise per kilometer in non-AC and all AC classes of mail/express trains.
The Railway Ministry has clarified that this is the second fare revision this year. Earlier, passenger fares were also increased in July 2025. The ministry says that the purpose of increasing the fare is to strike a balance between the carrying capacity of passengers and the operating expenses of the Railways.
Relief on ordinary journey up to 215 km
According to the ministry, no changes have been made in suburban services and season tickets, so that there is no additional burden on daily commuters. There will be no change in fare for second class in ordinary non-AC trains up to 215 kms. There will be an increase of Rs 5 for the distance of 216 to 750 km, Rs 10 for the distance of 751 to 1250 km, Rs 15 for the distance of 1251 to 1750 km and Rs 20 for the distance of 1751 to 2250 km.
Increase of 2 paise per km in Mail-Express and AC class.
The fare for non-suburban travel in sleeper class and first class has been increased equally by 1 paisa per kilometre. Whereas in Mail/Express trains, an increase of 2 paise per kilometer will be applicable in Sleeper, AC Chair Car, AC-3 Tier, AC-2 Tier and AC First Class. For example, passengers will now have to pay around Rs 10 more for a non-AC mail/express journey of 500 kilometres.
It has also been made clear in the notification that Indian Railways Major services of Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Vande Bharat, Duronto, Garib Rath, Amrit Bharat, Humsafar and other trains will also come under the ambit of these revised rates. However, no additional charges will be levied on tickets booked before December 26, even if the journey is on a later date.
