A powerful earthquake of 7.4 magnitude struck the coast of Mexico’s southern state of Chiapas on Friday. After this, a tsunami alert has been issued for about 10 lakh people.
According to the American agency USGS, the epicenter of the earthquake was near the city of Puerto Madero in Mexico. It came at a depth of 10 kilometers, due to which the possibility of strong tremors in the surrounding areas has increased.
The US Tsunami Warning System has issued a tsunami alert for the area. Earthquakes of 7.4 magnitude are kept in the ‘major’ category, which can cause large-scale devastation.
Earthquake tremors were also felt in Mexico’s neighboring countries Guatemala and El Salvador. At present there is no report of any casualty or major damage.

Tsunami danger within 300 km radius
Officials warned that dangerous tsunami waves could arise within a radius of about 300 kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake.
Tsunami alert has been issued mainly for 3 areas:
South Pacific Coast of Chiapas
coastal areas of oaxaca
Pacific coastal region adjacent to Guatemala
The administration has appealed to people to stay away from beaches and low-lying coastal areas. The sea level is being continuously monitored in Suchiate, located on the Mexico-Guatemala border.

The earthquake occurred in the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’, which is a horseshoe-shaped area about 40 thousand kilometers long spread around the Pacific Ocean.
This is considered to be the most active seismic zone in the world. About 75% of the world’s active and inactive volcanoes are located here and about 90% of earthquakes occur in this region.
22 earthquakes have been recorded in this area in the last 30 days. Among these, Friday’s 7.4 magnitude earthquake is said to be the most powerful.
Immediately after the earthquake, officials said that high and dangerous waves rising in the sea could flood coastal areas. People have been appealed to remain alert in view of possible floods, strong sea currents and high waves.
However, America’s National Tsunami Warning Center has made it clear that there is no danger of tsunami for America’s West Coast, British Columbia and Alaska.
