An earthquake of 6.5 magnitude occurred in the American country Mexico on Friday evening (Indian time). Its tremors were felt in the capital Mexico City and parts of southwestern Guerrero state. The National Earthquake Service confirmed this.
Due to the earthquake warning, President Claudia Sheinbaum and the journalists present at the press conference with her had to leave the Presidential Palace, but after some time they returned to the palace safely.
The President said that the epicenter of the earthquake was in San Marcos, which is about 230 kilometers from Mexico City.
According to initial reports, there was no major damage and no injuries in Mexico City and Guerrero.

Mexico is present in the Pacific Ocean ‘Ring of Fire’ area. It is considered to be the most earthquake and volcanically active area in the world. For this reason, strong earthquakes often occur in Mexico.
Several tectonic plates are active beneath and around Mexico. These include the Cocos Plate, North American Plate and Pacific Plate.
The Cocos Plate is continuously subducting beneath the North American Plate. Due to this collision, when the pressure inside the ground increases and suddenly releases, an earthquake occurs.
The capital Mexico City is situated on the old lake area. The soil here is soft, due to which even a distant earthquake is felt more strongly and causes more damage to buildings.
In view of the constant threat, Mexico has developed the Earthquake Early Warning System (SASMEX), which alerts people by sounding a siren a few seconds before the earthquake.
