US President Donald Trump is preparing to send US military and intelligence officers to Mexico to combat drug trafficking.
This claim has been made in the report of American news channel NBC News. The report quoted two current and two retired American officials as saying that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) may also be involved in this mission.
According to these officials, the Trump administration has started planning for this operation to target drug cartels in Mexico.
Officials also said that initial training related to this possible mission has started. According to the plan, the operation can also take place on Mexican soil, but the final decision to send troops has not been taken yet.
According to the report, the Trump administration is currently discussing the scope of the mission and the powers to take action.
Plan for air strikes and drone strikes
According to NBC News report, this operation may involve teams of America’s Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), which will work under the jurisdiction of the CIA.
Under the mission, drone strikes are planned to target drug labs and cartel leaders. There are many drones that require operators on the ground to operate them.
In February, the US State Department designated six Mexican cartels, the MS-13 gang and Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua as foreign terrorist organizations.
This gives free rein to the US Army and CIA to conduct covert operations. Trump has previously said that he had authorized CIA action in Venezuela and that he would target cartels on the ground if necessary.
Drug smuggling takes place from Mexico to America
Mexico is considered to be the hub of the world’s largest drug smuggling network, from where extremely dangerous drugs like cocaine, heroin, meth and fentanyl reach America. According to American agencies, the largest supply of drugs in the country is through Mexican cartels.
America is the world’s largest drug market. Every year millions of people become victims of drug addiction and thousands of deaths occur due to drugs like fentanyl. There is constant pressure on the US government to take strict measures against drug trafficking and that is why it keeps an eye on the cartels present in Mexico.
On the other hand, the cartels have become so powerful in Mexico that in many areas they challenge the police and the government. Many times even the local administration is unable to stop them due to armed gangs, threats, corruption and violence. Many cartels run themselves like shadow governments.
American soldiers can land in Mexico after 100 years
The US military has entered Mexico only a few times in history. The largest action came in 1916, when General John Pershing sent troops to pursue Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa. Since then the US has avoided direct military action in Mexico.
Legally the US cannot send troops without Mexico’s permission and Mexico has always opposed any foreign military intervention. If this operation really happens, it will be the first deployment of US military in Mexico after 100 years.
