Whenever Imtiaz Ali makes a film, the story does not remain just a story, it becomes a feeling. ‘I will be back’ is also a similar film. The only difference is that this time their love story is not born in the middle of any mountain, city or journey, but in the midst of the tragedy of partition of India and Pakistan. This film talks about love, but not just love. It also talks about those memories which do not leave a person till the end of his life. This is the story of people who lost their home, lost their city and in many cases lost their love. The story of the film starts with 95 year old Ishar Singh Grewal. Age and illness have weakened his body, but his stubbornness still remains. He wants to go back to Sargodha, Pakistan. His grandson Nirvair does not understand why his grandfather keeps talking about returning to the same place. Gradually the story moves towards the past and the love story of Ishtar and Jiya comes to the fore. Vedang Raina plays the role of young Ishtar and Sharvari plays the role of Jiya. In both their worlds there is love, dreams and hope of living together. Then partition happens and everything changes. The biggest quality of the film is that it shows Partition not as a political incident but as the pain of common people. However, the first part takes a little longer to establish the story. At times it seems that the film is moving around more than necessary to reach its destination. But in the second part the story becomes emotionally stronger and leaves an impact towards the end. Acting in the film: If we have to choose the strongest pillar of this film then it is Naseeruddin Shah. He did not play the character of Ishar Singh, he lived it. Forgotten memories, incomplete conversations, lost love and the desperation to touch the past for the last time, everything is visible on his face. There are many scenes where he makes the audience emotional even without speaking any dialogue. Vedang Raina has also done a brilliant job. There is a truth visible within him which makes the character believable. This can be counted among the strongest performances of his career so far. Sharvari attracts attention as soon as she comes on screen. There is both innocence and emotional depth in his character. The different kind of warmth that is there in the heroines of Imtiaz Ali’s films is also visible in the character of Jiya. Diljit Dosanjh is comfortable in his role, but the truth is that the most emotional and impressive part of the film goes to the parts of Naseeruddin Shah and Vedang Raina. Diljit’s story is important, but does not become that memorable. Director Imtiaz Ali’s biggest strength in films has always been to capture emotions and the same is visible here too. He does not show partition like statistics or history books. He shows how it would have felt to be separated during that period. How would it feel to lose a loved one suddenly? The second part of the film proves Imtiaz’s grip. Many scenes are remembered for a long time. Especially those scenes where love and separation are seen together. However, the biggest weakness of the film also lies here. The duration of almost three hours will not be easy for every viewer. There are many scenes in the first part which could have been shortened. Many times the film pauses more than necessary. Technical aspect of the film: The film looks very beautiful. Cinematography is a big plus point of the film. The streets of Sargodha, old houses, fields and the atmosphere of that period emerge very effectively on the screen. The hard work on the production design is also visible. The film succeeds in making its time and environment believable. Had the editing been a little tighter, the impact of the film could have been greater. There are always expectations from the pair of musicians Imtiaz Ali and AR Rahman in the film. In this film too, music becomes a part of the story. The background score gives emotional height to many scenes. Some songs remain memorable even after listening, but the album does not reach the level where Rahman’s old and memorable works have been reaching. Still, the music fits perfectly with the mood of the film. Shortcomings in the film: The biggest shortcoming of the film is its length. This nearly three-hour long film loses its pace at many places. One has to be patient in the first part. Some sub plots also do not leave complete impact. Many viewers may also feel that the film takes too long to reach its emotional impact. Final Verdict on the film ‘I will be back’ is not a film that will keep you glued to your seat and surprise you every ten minutes. This is a slowly unfolding film. Some parts of it are very beautiful, some parts are a little long, but when the film reaches its emotional peak, it leaves an impact. Naseeruddin Shah’s brilliant acting, Vedang Raina and Sharvari’s simple chemistry, Imtiaz Ali’s sensitive direction and AR Rahman’s music make the film special. If you like emotional stories and don’t mind slow-paced films, then ‘I’ll Be Back’ can prove to be a satisfying cinematic experience for you.
