Sonal Chauhan has caught the attention of the audience by playing the character of Mumtaz Biwi in the film Mirzapur: The Movie. Even though his character was seen in less screen time, the love story of Mumtaz and Babban is being liked a lot. Memes and discussions are also taking place on social media regarding his character. In a conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, Sonal told how she reached the character of Mumtaz, what she thinks about the question of coming out of the tent, how was the experience of working with Ravi Kishan and why there was a long gap in her career after Jannat. He also talked about his experience of working with Amitabh Bachchan and his dream role. Question: Your character Mumtaz Biwi is being discussed a lot in the film. People are asking on social media why did you come out of the tent? Answer: I did not expect that people would ask me this question so much. On social media, people are calling through DM and calling asking why I came out of the tent. I think the right answer is that I came out for love and was fighting for it. If the story progresses further then Mumtaz may take revenge for Babban’s death. Even in the film we told each other that we are each other’s responsibility. Question: How were you selected for the role of Mumtaz? Answer: I think Mirzapur was destiny for me. I met director Gurmeet Singh in connection with some other work. At that time the casting of the film was almost completed. After about 10 minutes he said that perhaps there was still a casting left and he felt that I could play the role of Mumtaz. I think I reached the right place at the right time. Question: What preparation did you do to play the character of Mumtaz? Answer: We had decided that Mumtaz would be kept very soft. The world of Mirzapur is full of violence, power and manipulation, so Mumtaz was a contrast to that world. I did not have much screen time and dialogues, so I tried to make the audience connect with the character even in a short period of time. Between the lines she says a lot without saying anything at all. I’m glad the audience understood those little things. Question: How challenging was it to shoot the song ‘Ghoom Ghoom’ in the desert of Jaisalmer? Answer: That shoot took place at night in the winter of December. The temperature dropped drastically after 2 am in the night and there was no scope for wearing warm clothes in my costume. It was challenging, but now it is a fond memory. What matters most is that the audience liked the song. Question: Were you not afraid of snakes and scorpions while shooting in Rajasthan? Answer: No, I like snakes very much. The scorpion shown in the film was fake. I myself am a Rajput and our roots are from Rajasthan. That’s why going to Rajasthan feels like coming home. Question: You come from a royal family. Didn’t the family oppose when I entered the industry? Answer: Was scolded a lot. We never even thought that I could enter the film industry. I come from a very conservative family. My upbringing was such that even going out of the house was not easily tolerated. Today I live alone in Mumbai. I never dreamed that life would be like this. That’s why I believe a lot in destiny. Some things are probably already written. Now I leave many things in God’s hands. Question: Why was there a long gap in your career after Jannat? Answer: Movies were released, but perhaps not as much as people think. I did Jannat at a very young age and at that time I had no contacts in the industry. I didn’t even know that work required meeting people. I used to think that just as heaven has come, work will come in the same way. But time passed and the work I wanted to do did not work out. After Jannat, people used to call me Zoya and even today many people call me Zoya. Now people are also calling Mumtaz Biwi. What would be a bigger victory for an artist than that people forget your name and start calling you by the name of the character. Question: You have also worked in South films. How was the experience there? Answer: My experience in South was very good. I worked with big and experienced artists and learned a lot from them. There, great importance is given to its audience and work is done with discipline. If I get good opportunities in future, I would definitely like to work. Question: How did the connection of the film ‘Buddha Hoga Tera Baap’ develop with South? Answer: After Jannat, I did a South film. After that I got a chance to work with Buddha Hoga Tera Baap director Puri Jagannath sir. He is a very big director of South. From there the sequence continued further. Question: How was the experience of working with Amitabh Bachchan? Answer: I got a chance to work with Amitabh Bachchan ji in my second Hindi film. Sharing a frame with him is also a big deal. Even by sitting in front of him, you can learn a lot – humility, discipline, dedication and passion. Apart from acting, I also learned from him how to behave with people and give equal respect to everyone. Question: Do you remember any special incident from the set of Buddha Hoga Tera Baap? Answer: We used to get tired seeing the energy of Bachchan Saheb, but he never got tired. I myself saw that he used to work continuously. He never asked how much time was left for my shot. He gave equal respect and honor to every artist. I think that along with his brilliant acting, his specialty is also his human nature. Question: What kind of offers are you getting now after Mirzapur movie? Answer: Offers are coming. Hopefully, now I will be offered such characters as the audience wants to see me. I want to do different types of roles, so that I don’t get stuck in one type of character and can prove myself in different roles. Question: Do you have any dream role which you definitely want to do in life? Answer: Maybe I got my dream role in the first film itself. I love love stories and I believe in love a lot. My favorite movie used to be Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. I truly believed that a king would come and love me the same way. Maybe I manifested it and Jannat also became a cult love story. But we artists are a little greedy. That’s why I would like to do such a love story again, which is very iconic and which people will remember for a long time. Question: The audience remembered you for so long. To whom will you give the biggest credit for this? Answer: I would like to give the biggest credit for this to my audience and fans. He kept me motivated for so long and never made me feel like I didn’t belong here. Even today people say that they see the same innocence and passion in me. It’s all because of their love. Even after so many years of Jannat, people feel as if the film was released only yesterday. I keep getting very lovely messages and DMs on social media. I have had to face very little trolling. Have received only love and positivity from most people. Question: What kind of DMs do you get? Answer: Many types of DMs come, but most of the messages are related to marriage. I get a lot of marriage proposals and people express their feelings in different interesting ways. Many times, I laugh after reading such messages and also feel good that people still love me so much. Question: Your parents may also be asking whether you have found someone for marriage or not? Answer: No-No, parents do not ask about marriage proposals through DM. (Laughs) Anyway, every message coming on social media can be discussed a little at home. Yes, questions regarding marriage come sometimes, but till now there is no such update worth answering. Question: So haven’t found the prince of dreams yet? Answer: Maybe the man of my dreams is still around. Maybe he’s around and I just don’t know it. When the right time comes and I meet the right person, then perhaps I too will know that this is the man of my dreams.
