The latest case is of the heart-wrenching attack on Khokan Chandra Das, a Hindu businessman, who was surrounded by an angry mob outside his house, beaten, stabbed and then doused with petrol and burnt alive. The condition of Khokan Das, who suffered burns up to 30 percent, remains critical and is being treated in the ICU of a hospital in Dhaka.

The victim’s wife Seema Das, who burst into tears with their newborn baby in her lap, said her husband was just about to reach home when the attack took place. She told news agency ANI, “My husband is a businessman. He was returning home when the mob caught him, poured petrol on his body and set him on fire. He is of a very peaceful nature, he had no enmity with anyone. We are unable to understand why he was targeted.”

Jumped into the pond to save his life, still got badly burnt

According to family members, the attack on Khokan Das took place around 8:30 pm on Wednesday night. His sister Anjana Rani Das told that the attackers first hit him on the head with sticks, then poured petrol and set him on fire. He said, “He kept shouting for help. To save his life, he jumped into the nearby pond, but by then he was badly burnt.”

Saurabh Das, nephew of Khokan Das, said that the family reached the hospital as soon as the information was received. He said, “My uncle’s face and hands are badly burnt. Police reached the spot and have started investigation.”

Another nephew Pranto Das termed the attack as a planned murder attempt and demanded strict action against the culprits. He said, “My uncle had no enmity with anyone. The mob attacked him with the intention of killing him. He is in the ICU and his condition is very serious.”

Fourth major attack on Hindus in two weeks

The attack on Khokan Das has happened at a time when bangladesh The minority Hindu community is already living in an environment of fear and insecurity. This is being said to be the fourth major attack on Hindus in the last two weeks.

A day before this, a Hindu security guard Bajendra Biswas was shot dead in Mymensingh. According to reports, the attacker had asked before opening fire – “Should I shoot you?” And then pulled the trigger. Both Biswas and accused Ansar worked as guards in the same company.

Moreover, recently Amrit Mandal was allegedly lynched to death by a mob, while factory worker Dipu Chandra Das was killed on charges of blasphemy. There has been concern and criticism regarding these incidents even at the international level.

The Indian government has already expressed concern over the ongoing violence against minorities in Bangladesh over “persistent and serious hostility”. This latest attack on Khokan Das has once again raised questions about the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh.
