Supreme Court seeks reply from MP government on illegal mining, also seeks data from Tamil Nadu and Punjab

The Supreme Court has termed illegal sand mining as a “serious problem” and has stated the need to control it. On Wednesday, the court asked 5 states including MP, Tamil Nadu, Punjab to present detailed facts and figures on this problem. The court gave this direction on the PIL of M. Alagarsamy filed in 2018.
The petition demands a CBI investigation into illegal sand mining on rivers and beaches in these states. The petitioner alleges that uncontrolled sand mining is causing serious harm to the environment. Their operation has been allowed without environmental clearance and planning.
A bench of CJI Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar said it has to be seen whether any similar petition against the NGT orders is pending in the apex court. The court also asked whether environmental impact assessment is mandatory for sand mining activities.
