New Year celebrations are about to begin across the world. According to Indian time, the New Year will ring in Kiribati, the easternmost part of the earth, today at 3:30 pm. After this, New Year will come one by one in Australia, New Zealand and many countries of Asia.

By the time it is 12 midnight on 31st December in India, New Year will have already arrived in 29 countries. In Europe and America it will be the evening of 31st December. In this way, the new year will revolve around the earth in different time zones for about 26 hours.

Know in the story how time zones decide the entry of New Year and 5 strange customs related to New Year…

First of all know what is this time zone

Time zones are a way of dividing the earth according to time. The Earth rotates 360 degrees every 24 hours. That means 15 degrees every hour, which was considered the distance of one time zone.

This created 24 equally spaced times around the world. Each time zone is of 15 degrees longitude and has a difference of about one hour from each other. For this reason, somewhere it is morning and somewhere it is night, and somewhere the New Year comes earlier and somewhere later. Time zones decide when the date will change in which country.

Why was there a need for time zones?

The clock was invented in the 16th century, but until the 18th century the New Year was set according to the position of the sun. When the sun was overhead, the time was considered to be 12 o’clock.

Initially there was no problem due to different timings of different countries, but later people started reaching from one country to another within a few hours by rail.

Due to different timings in the countries, people faced problems in keeping track of train timings. Understand this with an example – Suppose in Britain in the 1840s, if a person left London at 8 in the morning and went to Bristol, about 190 km to the west. His journey would have taken about 5 hours.

According to London time, he would have reached Bristol at 1 o’clock, but Bristol’s local time was 10 minutes behind London, so it would have been only 12:50 in Bristol’s clock.

How do time zones determine the entry of the new year?

New Year comes at 12 midnight according to the time zone. The country in the east celebrates the New Year first (such as Kiribati and New Zealand). After this, the new year gradually arrives in the rest of the time zones.

In New Zealand the New Year starts 7 and a half hours before India and in America it starts 9 and a half hours after India. The process of bringing in the New Year continues for about 26 hours all over the world.
