- India F1 Racing Return | Sports Ministry Forms Task Force For Grand Prix

The last Formula 1 race was held in India in 2013.
The Sports Ministry has formed a task force to promote the return of Formula One and motorsports in India. It consists of 10 members. The task force will assess the motorsports ecosystem of the country. The possibility of holding F1 Grand Prix in India in 2028 will also be explored.
Solution to tax related issues will have to be found – Sports Minister
Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday said that the main objective of the task force is to assess the existing motorsports ecosystem of the country. The biggest challenge is to find a solution to the tax issues which had previously driven Formula One away from India.
Who is included in the task force
- Program Director of NITI Aayog, Yugal Kishore Joshi will be the chairman of the task force. Joint Secretary Kunal will also participate in this.
- Joint secretaries of the commerce and tourism ministries will also be part of the team. Representatives of Buddha International Circuit and Madras International Circuit will also be involved.
- Representatives of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra governments have also been given a place in the task force.
- A representative from FMSCI and a technical expert will also be part of the team.
There are 24 F1 races a year
According to the current calendar of Formula-1, 24 Grand Prix races are held every year. Of these, 9 races are held in Europe, 8 in Asia, 5 in North America and 1 each in South America and Australia-Oceania.
Organized for 3 years in Greater Noida
Formula 1 race took place in India for three years from 2011 to 2013. It was known as the Indian Grand Prix. This race took place at Buddha International Circuit in Greater Noida. At that time the government had refused to consider F1 racing as a sport and placed it in the entertainment category. A 40% tax was imposed on F1 racing. Because of this, this race could not be held in India after 2013.
In 2013, the race held in Greater Noida was won by Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull team.
task force work
The task force will identify policy changes for the development of motorsports. This includes assessing infrastructure and operational needs.
The team will assess the economic, tourism and investment benefits of hosting major events. Apart from this, the feasibility of holding an F1 Grand Prix in 2028 will also be examined.
The return of international level Formula One races to India is part of the Sports Ministry’s efforts to re-develop motorsports in the country.
