After the defeat against South Africa, some people blamed the difficult pitch of Kolkata and some blamed the poor batting of India. But, the big question is whether Indian batsmen are losing the skill of batting against spinners.

Indian coach Gautam Gambhir said- ‘The pitch was not so bad that it could not be batted. This was exactly the pitch we wanted. Indian batsmen batted poorly against the spinners. Our batsmen need to improve mentally and skill-wise. Gambhir’s point is also valid. Because, India has lost 60% of the wickets against spinners in the Kolkata Test. 12 out of 20 batsmen of the team were out on spinners’ balls.

Is the reason for the loss due to the spinners not being able to play? Yes, the figures of the last one year are saying the same. In the 6 Test matches played in India last year, the Indian team has lost 87 wickets, out of which 60 wickets have gone to the spinners. Whereas 27 wickets have gone to fast bowlers.

In the last one year, in the 6 Test matches played on Indian pitches, spinners have taken 77 out of 111 wickets, which is 69%. Whereas, pacers have got 31% wickets.

Why are domestic stars like Sarfaraz not given attention? After Gambhir’s statement and figures, the question arises why our ability to play spin is decreasing. There are two reasons for this – the Indian team has the same faces on domestic and foreign tours. Batsmen like Sarfaraz Khan, Rajat Patidar and Shreyas Iyer are not seen among them. Who is performing well with red ball in domestic cricket.

The second reason is that players who have secured a place in the Indian Test team play less red ball domestic cricket. Due to which the ability to play spin on home pitches is decreasing. All-time great Sachin Tendulkar also used to play Ranji in his time. But, most of the batsmen of today’s Test team shy away from playing domestic cricket.

Sarfaraz and Patidar were given a chance in the home series last year. He was dropped due to not being able to perform in two-four matches. Whereas, the team management kept supporting a player like Sai Sudarshan.

What has changed in 25 years Before 2000, playing spin was our strength. Batsmen like Mohammad Azhar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman were masters of batting on spin. But, later things started changing. BCCI made a habit of playing on fast pitches to win abroad. We got benefit as well as loss from this.

We beat Australia at home on the 2018 and 2021 tours. But, last year there was a clean sweep against New Zealand. Then after 24 years, a team did a clean sweep on Indian soil. Before that in the year 2000, South Africa had defeated India 2-0 in India. Now again the Indian team is in danger of a clean sweep at home.

Last year New Zealand had a clean sweep of 3-0 Last year, the New Zealand team made a clean sweep by defeating India 3-0 in the 3-Test series. Then the Indian batsmen could not face the part-time spinners of New Zealand at their own home.

Last month, India played a 2-Test series against West Indies. The first match was played in Ahmedabad and the second match was played in Delhi. The Indian team made a clean sweep of the series by winning both the matches.
