US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday expressed disappointment over the question of racial comments and discrimination against Indians in America. He said that such statements do not represent the entire American society. At a joint press conference with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi, Rubio was asked a question on incidents of racism against Indians in America. On this he said, there are some stupid people in every country who say objectionable things online or in public, but this does not decide the real identity of any country. Rubio praised the people of the Indian community. Rubio said that America is still one of the most welcoming countries in the world. He said, “Our country has been made stronger by people who come from all over the world. They came to America, integrated into American society and contributed to the progress of the country.” He especially praised the Indian community and said that people of Indian origin have made a huge contribution to the American economy and society. Indian-Americans are playing a big role in many important sectors including business sector, technology, medicine and public services. He said, “Indians have contributed more than $20 billion to the American economy. We want this figure to increase further.” Rubio also said that the relationship between India and America is not limited to just cooperation, but it is a strategic partnership. According to him, both the countries have the ability to work together in different areas of the world. When Rubio was asked a question during the press conference, Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar was seen smiling slightly. However, no separate comment was made by the Indian delegation on this issue. Rubio said – India and America are the two largest democracies in the world. This press conference took place after delegation level talks between the two countries. Issues like defense cooperation, trade, strategic technology, energy and regional security were discussed in the talks. Earlier, Marco Rubio described India-US relations as one of Washington’s most important strategic partnerships. He said that America and India are the two largest democracies in the world. The relationship between the two countries is not only regional but also of global importance. Whereas S Jaishankar described the India-US relationship as a comprehensive global strategic partnership. He said that the interests of both the countries coincide in many areas and issues. Rubio is currently on a several-day tour of India. During this time, he will also participate in the meeting of foreign ministers of Quad countries. This group includes India, America, Japan and Australia.
