This is going to happen for the first time in the history of the Bharatiya Janata Party, when the names of senior leaders and founding members Lal Krishna Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi will not be in the voter list in the election of the party president. BJP has announced the schedule of election of its National President, under which a total of 5708 voters from across the country will participate in this process. If necessary, voting will be held on January 20.
It has been the tradition of BJP that the national president is elected by consensus. According to the same tradition, this time also the election is being considered formal and the election of Nitin Nabin as the national president is being considered almost certain. However, one fact related to this election is considered special from political and organizational point of view. This is the first time since the party’s establishment in 1980, when Lal Krishna Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi are not part of the electoral college of the National President.
National President election schedule announced, 5708 voters will decide
According to the BJP constitution, there is a fixed process of organizational elections before the election of the National President. First the president is elected at the booth level, after this organizational elections are held at Mandal, District and then State level. Only after completion of all these stages is the electoral college formed for the election of the National President. Members of the National Council and State Councils are included in this electoral college.
Currently, under BJP’s Sangathan Parv, organization elections are going on in state units across the country. According to the party constitution, the election of the national president can be conducted only after the organization elections are completed in at least fifty percent of the states. This condition has been fulfilled, although organizational elections are still pending in some states. These include Karnataka, Haryana, Tripura and Delhi.
According to BJP’s tradition, the president will be selected by consensus.
Lal Krishna Advani has been an MP from Gandhinagar for a long time and that is why he was elected as a member of the National Council from Gujarat. In the year 2021, he became a member of the National Council from Delhi. While Murli Manohar Joshi was also a member of the National Council from Uttar Pradesh while he was MP from Kanpur. After ceasing to be an MP, he was also elected council member from Delhi.
This time the situation is different. The elections of Delhi Pradesh Organization have not been completed yet. For this reason, National Council members have not been elected from Delhi. Since both Advani and Joshi were currently considered council members associated with Delhi, they could not be included in the electoral college of the National President.
Advani and Joshi out of the constituency for the first time
It is also worth noting that the party has included both Advani and Joshi in the guiding board. He is in the role of guide for the organization, but this time he will not have any formal participation in the election process. This change related to the BJP President election is being seen as an important turning point in the organizational structure of the party.
