On December 18, Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das was killed by a mob in Bangladesh on false charges of blasphemy.
There has been a rapid increase in cases related to allegations of blasphemy i.e. insulting religion against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. At least 71 such cases have been registered between June and December 2025.
This information has come out in the report of ‘Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities’ (HRCBM), an organization working on minorities of Bangladesh.
Human rights activists say that the same method is being adopted every time for the attack. First the allegations on social media, then immediate arrests, followed by gathering of mobs and attacks on Hindu areas. Now blasphemy charges are becoming a weapon to spread fear and suppress minorities.
Such incidents took place in more than 30 districts of the country.
HRCBM says that these incidents are spread in more than 30 districts of the country. Such cases have been reported in many areas like Rangpur, Chandpur, Chittagong, Dinajpur, Khulna, Cumilla, Ghazipur, Tangail and Sylhet.
The report said that such a large number of similar cases shows that these are not just isolated incidents, but targeting of minorities is becoming a trend.
According to the report, as soon as someone is accused of blasphemy, the police immediately takes action, but at the same time a crowd gathers in the area and violence starts. Many times the blame is on one person, but the angry mob punishes the entire Hindu locality.

A few months ago in Bangladesh, a mob of fundamentalists attacked a Hindu locality in Chittagong and set it on fire.
Hindu neighborhoods are vandalized
On June 19, 2025, Tamal Baidya, 22, was arrested in Barisal district for allegedly making remarks about Prophet Mohammed. A few days later, after 24 year old Shanto Sutradhar was accused in Chandpur, tension spread in the area and demonstrations took place.
The most serious incident occurred in Rangpur district on 27 July. After the arrest of 17 year old Ranjan Roy, the mob vandalized about 22 houses of Hindus. This incident made it clear how quickly the situation goes out of control once allegations are made and attempts are made to scare the entire community.
On December 18, 2025, 30-year-old Dipu Chandra Das was beaten to death by a mob in Bhaluka area of Mymensingh district and then his body was burnt. Earlier in September 2024, 15-year-old Utsav Mandal was attacked in Khulna, in which he died. These incidents have raised concerns across the country.

After Deepu’s murder, people crushed his body, then hung it from a tree and burnt it.
A case is registered even on verbal allegations
The organization says many cases start with social media, especially Facebook. Often allegations are made on such posts, which are either fake, or have been posted by hacking the account. Many times a case is registered only on a verbal allegation, without any concrete investigation. Despite this, the police comes under pressure from the crowd and takes immediate action.
The report states that more than 90% of the accused in these cases are Hindus. Many of the victims are minors, aged between 15 and 17 years.
In many cases, cases have been filed against students under the Cyber Security Act. Students of Khulna University, North South University and other educational institutions were suspended, expelled from colleges or sent to police custody.
The report also shows that in some places the violence does not stop even after the police take the accused into custody. The mob attacks Hindu houses and shops. This raises the question whether the administration is able to protect the minorities or not.
India also expressed concern on these matters
India has also expressed concern over these incidents. India’s Ministry of External Affairs expressed deep sorrow and concern over the recent mob lynching of two Hindu youths in Bangladesh. Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the continuous violence against minorities in Bangladesh is a matter of grave concern and it is hoped that the culprits will be given strict punishment. All these incidents are happening at a time when there is political instability in Bangladesh and questions are being raised regarding law and order.
At the end of the report, a warning has been given that if action is not taken against the culprits and concrete steps are not taken for the protection of minorities, the condition of religious minorities may worsen.
