Sheikh Hasina’s government was toppled in Bangladesh as a part of a conspiracy. During the ongoing movement against him, student leaders had started discussing who would take charge of the country after him. This claim has been made by Shafiqul Alam, former press secretary of Mohammad Yunus, who was an advisor to the interim government. Alam wrote on social media that the students had taken the help of French news agency AFP journalist Kaderuddin Shishir in contacting Yunus. They wanted Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus to run the interim government. Hasina left Bangladesh on 5 August 2024. Two days before this, there had been a conversation between Yunus and the students. The security agencies were not even aware of the conversation. According to Shafikul Alam, the student leaders needed a trustworthy person to convey their message to Yunus. In such a situation, Kaderuddin Shishir, the then editor of AFP’s Dhaka-based fact-checking team, helped in making contact between the two parties. Alam claimed that the security agencies were not aware of this conversation. If the authorities had come to know about this, Shishir and the entire AFP team could have been in danger. Alam did not give complete details of the conversation. It is also not clear whether Shishir’s role was limited only to conducting initial talks or whether he took part in further talks as well. Naheed Islam, one of the prominent leaders of the student movement, had proposed to make him the chief advisor of the interim government. Later an interim government was formed under the leadership of Yunus. How did the movement against Hasina government start? The student movement against reservation in government jobs started in Bangladesh in 2024. There, up to 30% seats in government jobs were reserved for the families of those who fought in the 1971 liberation war. Students said that due to this, the opportunities for common youth to get government jobs are decreasing. He wanted that more jobs should be available in recruitment based on examination and qualification. The movement that started with this demand gradually turned into a demonstration against the government. A large number of people were killed in government action. According to United Nations estimates, about 1,400 people died between July and August 2024. Tariq Rehman came to power after Yunus’s interim government. The job of Yunus’s interim government was to conduct elections and hand over power to the elected government. For this, general elections were held on 12 February 2026, in which Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won a big victory. The party won 209 out of 300 seats in Parliament. After this, on 17 February 2026, Tariq Rehman took oath as Prime Minister. With his assuming power, the tenure of Yunus’s interim government ended. Now former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina wants to return to the country. Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina had said on 19 October 2026 that she will return to her country in December. She said that the current Tariq Rahman government of Bangladesh can arrest, kill or torture her, but she is not afraid of these threats. Hasina said that no matter what the danger is, she does not care about it and she has to return to her country. Rahman’s government has raised the demand for extradition several times. Tariq Rahman’s government has raised the demand for sending Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh several times. This issue has also affected the relations between Bangladesh and India. India had invited Tariq Rehman to attend the BRICS summit. Apart from this, he was separately invited by India to visit India since February. However, Tariq Rehman has not visited India since becoming Prime Minister. The issue of Hasina’s extradition remains a cause of tension between the two countries. —————————– Also read this news… Maldives President moving closer to Pakistan, opposition warned: Said- If India feels threatened, it will have to face consequences; Muizzoo signed 20 agreements with Pakistan.
