The population of Hindus in Pakistan is now only 1.7%. This information was given in a report by British Hindu organization Insight UK. In 1941, the population of Hindus in today’s Pakistan was 14.6%. In the report, the reason for the decline in the population of Hindus was said to be violence and religious conversion. The report said that thousands of Hindu families had to leave their homes during and after Partition. The ancestral lands and farms of many families were also snatched away. The report also raised issues of restrictions on religious freedom and forced religious conversion. The organization has demanded the British government to take steps for the protection of minorities in Pakistan. Lands of Hindu families snatched after partition According to the report, thousands of Hindu families were displaced due to the violence during and after the partition of 1947. Many families lost their ancestral lands and farms. The report claims that the occupation of these properties under Pakistan’s enemy property laws weakened the economic condition of the Hindu community. In Pakistan, enemy property is those houses, lands or other properties which the government has taken into its possession considering them to be the property of people who have migrated to India or citizens of the enemy country. Article 41 and 91 of the Constitution of Pakistan have also been mentioned in the report banning Hindus from becoming President and Prime Minister. Under these, the posts of President and Prime Minister are only for Muslim citizens. The reform bill introduced in 2019 to change these rules could not move forward. The organization also said that while making a passport in Pakistan, citizens have to declare their religion. The plan to build a Hindu temple in Islamabad has also not been completed yet. According to the report, after the construction of the temple was approved in 2020, the work was stopped due to opposition from Islamic organizations. More than 1,000 Hindu-Christian women are kidnapped every year. Reports have claimed that every year around 1,000 or more Hindu and Christian women and girls are kidnapped in Pakistan. It is alleged that later they are forcibly converted to their religion and married to the kidnappers. Many of these minors are from poor families. They also face difficulties in getting justice.
