The makers of the film ‘Haq’ had made it clear from the beginning that this movie is a fictional adaptation of Jigna Vora’s book ‘Bano Bharat Ki Beti’ and is inspired by the Shah Bano case.

A topic that has been at the center of debate for years is the fight for women’s rights between religion, society and law. Director Suparn Verma weaves this sensitive subject into a blend of emotion and reality. While watching the film, one realizes that this story is not just about one woman, but about the struggle that many women of every generation have faced.

How is the story of the film?

Shazia Bano (Yami Gautam) lives a happy life with her husband Abbas Khan (Emraan Hashmi), two sons and a daughter, but when Abbas remarries and abandons Shazia along with the children, her world falls apart. Abbas initially promises to pay for the children’s expenses, but when that too is refused, Shazia does not remain silent and takes the step of going to court.

This step of his creates a stir in the society. In response, Abbas pronounces triple talaq to silence her. The fight which was initially limited to the four walls of a house, gradually starts taking on religious colors and social dimensions.

Amidst the interpretations of court, society and religion, Shazia’s voice now starts rising not just for herself, but for every woman who wants to stand up for her rights and self-respect. The story of the film later takes the form of a national debate and leaves the question whether even today women have got the place they deserve in the society.

How is the direction and technical aspects of the film?

Suparn Verma’s direction is the soul of this film. It was not easy to choose such a sensitive and thought-provoking topic and present it truthfully without overdrama.

The treatment of the film is raw and real. The tone, set, location and cinematography reflect the feel of that period (1980s) very well.

The first half feels a bit slow, but in the second half the movie picks up and keeps the audience engaged till the end. Despite the courtroom drama, this film does not go on the typical Bollywood track, this is its biggest feature.

How is the music of the film?

Vishal Mishra’s music matches the soul of the film. The songs are sweet and completely connected to the situation, though not romantic chartbusters like Emraan Hashmi’s previous works, but the background score deepens the emotions and adds depth.
