The film The Raja Saab is released in theaters worldwide on January 9.

The first question that arises after watching the film The Raja Saab is whether grandeur has now become the identity of cinema. A superstar like Prabhas, a huge budget, a fresh pack of horror comedy and pan India appeal, everything is there, but by the end of the film it becomes clear that big sets, expensive VFX and a long runtime do not automatically make a film strong. This film of director Maruthi neither scares, nor makes you laugh, nor does it bind you emotionally.

story of the film

The story starts with Raja Prabhas and his grandmother Gangamma (Zarina Wahab). Gangamma, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s, is unable to forget her missing husband Kanakraju (Sanjay Dutt). With the help of this hope of his grandmother, the king sets out in search of his grandfather.

This search takes him through Hyderabad to a mysterious and allegedly haunted palace, where tantra mantra, hypnotism, greed and many secrets of the past are hidden. The story sounds interesting, but by the time it comes on screen it falls apart. The film changes locations without any concrete reason, characters keep coming and going and the viewer is left wondering what the real direction is?

acting in film

This time Prabhas wants to be seen in a light and comic style. His timing works in some scenes, but the depth of the character is so little that it becomes difficult to connect with him. In many scenes, his look and expression seem unnatural, as if he is not completely sure of himself.

Zarina Wahab gives the most honest performance of the film. His emotional scenes leave an impact, especially around the climax.

Sanjay Dutt’s character could have been strong, but the writing limits him too.

The three actresses Malavika Mohanan, Nidhi Agarwal and Riddhi Kumar become less a part of the story and more a decoration. They have almost nothing memorable to do.

The team of comic artists provides relief at some places, but the weak script takes away their strength too.

Direction and technical aspects in the film

Maruti’s biggest mistake is that there is no clarity on what to make of the film. Horror, comedy, fantasy and emotion are all served together, but there is no balance. Editing makes the film heavier. The length of about three hours starts to get tiring.

Cinematography is average and excessive use of green screen makes the film artificial.

Despite such a big budget, VFX look weak and incomplete at many places.

Music and background score in the film

Thaman’s music does not become the life of this film. The background score is louder than necessary at many places, but not effective. The songs break the pace of the story and do not leave any tune worth remembering.

Final verdict regarding the film

The Raja Saab is a film that looks better on paper, not on screen. It has money, star, scale, but no soul. Prabhas’s efforts are visible, some scenes are okay, but overall the film seems long, tired and directionless.

After this grand journey of Rs 400 crores, the only question left is that if the story was not strong, then what was the need to build such a big palace.
