Some time ago, Arshad Warsi had criticized the film Kalki 2898AD and said that Prabhas looked like Joker in the film. He was heavily criticized for this statement and the film’s director Nag Ashwin and actor Sudhir Babu condemned his statement. Now Arshad has broken his silence on this controversy and said that he jokes only with those whom he knows. On the statement given on Prabhas, Arshad Warsi said in an interview to News 18, ‘I joke only with my friends. To be honest, I don’t joke with anyone else. If I have to make a joke, I do it only with people I know well and who are my friends. The actor further said, ‘I know what to say in front of them and to what extent. But if I don’t know someone, I don’t say anything to him, because I don’t have any information about him. It’s just that.’ In the conversation, Arshad said that nowadays there is so much scrutiny on everything on social media that people should learn to take jokes as jokes. “We should all live a little lighter,” he said. Arshad believes that apart from real life, people should also take the jokes shown in films as jokes. He gave the example of that dialogue from the film Munnabhai MBBS, in which he called a Chinese tourist Hakka Noodles. Arshad said, ‘There is nothing objectionable in it. Today people may over-analyze him, but he is not wrong. Just as we jokingly call a boy ‘hair shop’, there is nothing objectionable in that either. However, Arshad also says that he believes in ‘self-censorship’. He said, “Everyone should follow it. I personally am not a big fan of Pakistani humor because it is often demeaning to other people. It is more about making fun of people and teasing them by calling names. Many people like it, but not me. Similarly, I also do not like double meanings or sexual comedy. It is my personal choice. People may have their own choice, but I adopt this kind of self-censorship for myself.” What was Arshad’s old statement and why was there controversy? In Samdish Bhatia’s podcast, Arshad Warsi was asked which was the last bad film he watched. On this he had taken the name of Kalki and said, ‘When I saw ‘Kalki’, I did not like it. I feel very sad but Amit ji, that man does not understand. I swear, if I get as much power as he has, life will become better. They are amazing, incredible. I felt really sad seeing Prabhas. Why was he in that movie, I’m sorry but he looked like a clown. I want to watch ‘Mad Max’ (Hollywood film). I want to see Mel Gibson (Hollywood actor) there. What have you done to him, friend? Why do you do this… I don’t understand. Director Nag Ashwin got angry on Arshad Warsi’s statement. After Arshad’s statement came out, Kalki director Nag Ashwin condemned it and wrote on social media, “Let’s not go back. Now debates like North vs South or Bollywood vs Tollywood should stop. We should focus on the bigger picture, a united Indian film industry. Arshad Sahab should have chosen his words a little better, but never mind. I am ‘Bujji’ for his children. I am sending toys. And I will try so hard that after watching the first show of ‘Kalki 2’, he will tweet that Prabhas is the best actor till date. South actor Sudhir Babu angrily wrote, “It is okay to criticize someone, but it is never right to talk derogatory about anyone. I did not expect such unprofessional remarks from Arshad Warsi. Prabhas’s stature is so big that the comments of small-minded people make no difference to him.”
