Read what this entire incident was…

  • During the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections 2012, the then Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid had made an election promise of increasing Muslim reservation. On BJP’s complaint, the Election Commission had reprimanded Khurshid considering it a violation of the code of conduct.
  • After the action, some Congress leaders started calling the Election Commission capricious and arrogant. Qureshi felt bad about this. During the Eid Milan function, he expressed his displeasure to the then PM’s press secretary Harish Khare and said that this matter should reach the Prime Minister.
  • The very next day a call came from the PMO and Manmohan Singh called Qureshi to meet him the same evening. According to Qureshi, on reaching the Prime Minister’s residence, Dr. Singh was found waiting for him at the door.
  • He said angrily – Harish told me what you said. If you think so, I will commit suicide. I remained silent. Qureshi writes- I was talking about the behavior of some ministers, not about him.
  • Recalling Manmohan Singh’s words, Qureshi wrote – It was unbearable for him that I doubted his intentions. They could not think of this even for a moment. After this it took me a few minutes to calm him down.
