Indian dialogue writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar got angry over the statement of Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari in which he said that he tolerates Hindus in Pakistan. Javed Akhtar has criticized him and called him insensitive. When some people started condemning Javed Akhtar’s statement, he reprimanded everyone one by one. Zardari said – We tolerate Hindus, we Muslims. While talking about the situation of Hindus in Pakistan, Zardari had compared them with the Hindus of India. Zardari said, “Indians have a different perspective. They have their own agenda in their mind. They believe in a united India. But there is a lot in between which they have forgotten.” He further said, “We are Muslims and they are not. But we are like-minded Muslims who tolerate 3-4 per cent Hindu population in Pakistan. They are as free and good as they were anywhere else. They would rather live with us than with them.” On this statement, Javed Akhtar wrote on the official social media, “Pakistan’s Mr. Zardari, who came into limelight after marrying Benazir Bhutto, says that he tolerates 3-4 percent Hindu population in his country. I understand, Mr. Zardari, you have always been insensitive towards all those things whose percentage is less than 10 percent.” Javed Akhtar trolled in hushed words. Javed Akhtar mentioned 10 percent in his statement because Zardari is called Mr. Ten Percent. Zardari, the husband of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, earned the nickname “Mr. Ten Percent” in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was accused of demanding 10 percent commission in connection with government projects and business deals. Zardari had denied these allegations. This surname became more popular after the Bhutto government was dismissed by the then President Ghulam Ishaq Khan in 1990. Javed Akhtar also reprimanded the trollers. On one hand, Javed Akhtar’s statement is being appreciated, on the other hand, a Pakistani user raised the question, “Have you ever raised your voice for the minorities in India? No. The bitter truth is that to survive in India, every non-Hindu is forced to flatter and please the Hindu elite. Despite all the allegations against him, Zardari became the President of a country. Yet you You are a zero everywhere else, no matter how much you keep licking their feet. Javed Akhtar replied in his own style, “Your first question shows me how little you know about me. And your last words show what your ‘class’ is.” Javed Akhtar had given anti-Pak statements earlier also, I will choose hell between hell and Pakistan: On May 17, 2025, at the launch of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut’s book ‘Narkatala Swarg’ in Mumbai, Javed Akhtar had given a sharp statement calling Pakistan worse than hell. He had said- ‘If I have to choose between Pakistan and hell, I will choose hell.’ Partition of India was wrong, Pakistan emerged from Hindustan: In 2023, at the Faiz Festival in Lahore, Javed Akhtar clearly said that the partition of India was a historical mistake. He told that Pakistan was a part of India, which was divided into two countries in 1947. Akhtar stressed that the people of both the countries are fundamentally linked to the same cultural roots and partition created unnecessary enmity. Pakistani audience applauded this statement, but controversy broke out in India-Pakistan media. Secularism is almost dead in Pakistan: Javed Akhtar makes sharp attack on the social condition of Pakistan in a discussion on India-Pakistan relations. He believed that secularism has remained nominal there and fundamentalism has become dominant. Some intellectuals in Pakistan called it over-generalization, but in India this statement remained limited to literary circles. Giving an example, Javed said that seeing the condition of minorities in Pakistan, it is clear that secularism is in danger.
