The government of Pakistan has approved the construction of an artificial island in the Arabian Sea. It will be used as a permanent platform for oil exploration in the sea. Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) will lead this project.
Pakistan has taken this decision after getting Trump’s support. Trump had announced in July that America and Pakistan would together develop Pakistan’s large oil reserves. He even said that if this oil is found, India can also buy it.
Now Pakistan is planning to dig 25 oil wells in the Arabian Sea with the help of this artificial island.

Engineering tenders for this artificial island will be completed soon. (file photo)
Island will be built 30 km away from the coast of Sindh
According to Bloomberg report, this artificial island is being built near Sujawal area, about 30 km away from the coast of Sindh. Sujawal is about 130 km from Karachi.
The island is being made 6 feet high to protect it from high waves of the sea. The drilling projects which were earlier hampered due to sea waves, will be resolved. The island is expected to be ready by February.
According to Mettis Global, moving heavy machinery and supplies from one stable platform can reduce expenses by approximately 33%. Earlier there were frequent delays due to weather, which increased the cost. According to PPL, drilling can go on here 24 hours a day.
Oil reserves were found in Pakistan last year
A large reserve of oil and gas was found in Pakistan’s maritime border in September last year. According to Pakistani media house Dawn, a survey was conducted in the area for 3 years in collaboration with a partner country. Later, the existence of oil and gas reserves was confirmed.
According to some reports, this reserve will be the fourth largest oil and gas reserve in the world. Currently, Venezuela has the largest oil reserves, where there are 34 lakh barrels of oil. At the same time, America has the purest oil reserves, which has not been used till now.

If Pakistan is successful in extracting oil and gas, it will prove beneficial for its economy.
It will take 4-5 years to extract oil or gas
According to the report, it will cost about Rs 42 thousand crores to complete the research related to the reserves. After this, it may take 4-5 years to extract it from the depths of the sea. If the research is successful, more money will be needed to install wells and build other infrastructure to extract oil and gas.
Pakistani officials have described the discovery of oil and gas reserves as good for the country’s ‘blue water economy’. Promoting the economy through sea routes, new ports and maritime policy is called Blue Economy.
Pakistan imports 80% oil
Pakistan ranks 50th in crude oil reserves in the world. It has to import more than 80% of its oil.
Its daily oil production capacity is about one-third that of India. In 2019, a drilling project named ‘Kekra-1’ near Karachi was unsuccessful and after this, big companies like Exxon Mobil left Pakistan.
Trump had written on social media in July that America and Pakistan would together develop Pakistan’s large oil reserves. He even said that if this oil is found, India can also buy it.
After this, Pakistan increased its closeness with America. PAK government signed crypto deal with America, gave credit to Trump for ending tension between India and Pakistan, even nominated Trump for Nobel Prize.
