Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the Yadgar-e-Fatah Memorial on 13 August. It is built to commemorate the military conflict with India in May 2025.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has once again warned India regarding the Indus Water Agreement. He said that there will be no compromise on Pakistan’s share of water. If any attempt is made to stop or reduce it, a befitting reply will be given.
Prime Minister Shahbaz, while addressing an event in Islamabad on Thursday, said that Pakistan’s stand on Kashmir will never change. In his speech, Shahbaz once again praised Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and claimed that under his leadership Pakistan defeated India.
Said China’s friendship stronger than Himalayas
In his speech, Shahbaz described China-Pakistan friendship as higher than the Himalayas. He said that China is a great friend of Pakistan. He has been with the country like a rock in every difficult moment.
Again repeated – Trump had made ceasefire
Shahbaz Sharif once again claimed in his speech that US President Donald Trump had played an important role in preventing conflict between India and Pakistan in May 2025. Praising Trump, he said that due to his initiative a timely ceasefire was possible.
However, India has consistently maintained that the ceasefire was reached through direct talks between the military officials of the two countries and there was no mediation by any third country.
Also spoke on Kashmir, Palestine and Afghanistan
In his speech, Shehbaz Sharif said that Pakistan’s stand on Kashmir will not change and the sacrifices of Kashmiris will not go in vain. He also said that Pakistan will continue to support the rights of the people of Palestine.
He appealed to the interim government of Afghanistan not to allow its land to be used for terrorist activities. Also claimed that Pakistan has also played the role of mediator between America and Iran.
India had put a stop to the treaty after the Pahalgam attack
After the Pahalgam terrorist attack in April 2025, India had decided to postpone the Indus Water Treaty. Since then this issue has remained a major cause of tension between the two countries.
India says the ban on the treaty will continue until Pakistan takes concrete and credible action against cross-border terrorism. At the same time, Pakistan claims that this treaty is still legally effective and it cannot be suspended unilaterally.
Under the Indus Water Treaty signed between India and Pakistan in 1960, six rivers of the Indus river system were divided.
- India got the right to use the waters of Ravi, Beas and Sutlej rivers.
- Pakistan was given the waters of Indus, Jhelum and Chenab rivers.
There have been differences between the two countries regarding this treaty for a long time and in recent months this dispute has deepened again.
Pakistan is facing serious water crisis
According to reports, Pakistan is currently facing a serious water crisis. Water shortage is continuously increasing especially in Sindh and Balochistan. According to the data of Sindh Irrigation Department-
- There is 64.1% water shortage in the North West Canal.
- A decrease of 38% has been recorded in Rice Canal.
- There is 82% water shortage in Dadu Canal.
There is also growing concern about the Sukkur Barrage, an important part of Pakistan’s irrigation system. There is a possibility that agriculture and economy will be affected due to continuous decrease in water level.
