This yatra was to last for a total of 57 days, but only 4 days have passed and the news has come that the size of the holy Shivalinga of Amarnath cave has reduced to a very small size. This Himling of Baba Barfani has already melted more than 90 percent.
What is the reason for melting of ice?
Many reasons are being given behind this. Such as excessive heat, increasing temperature in the Himalayan region, change in weather patterns and climate change. Among all these reasons, there is another big reason. That is to expand facilities and development at the expense of nature. a decade ago from today Amarnath Yatra It was not easy and the route of the Yatra was also very difficult, but after this, in the name of facilities, development started reaching the route of Amarnath Yatra.
As facilities increased on the cave route, the crowd also increased.
The roads leading to the cave were widened. The number of temporary tents and shops was increased along the yatra route and the langar system that runs reached near the cave. This development did not stop here. Recently, the ropeway project for Amarnath Yatra was approved and along with this, discussion is also going on to build a tunnel between Sheshnag and Panjtarni. This is a development which can provide better facilities to the devotees during Amarnath Yatra.
Why is the ‘nature’ of the mountains being affected?
But think once that due to this ‘development’ the nature around the Amarnath cave gets affected and due to that the Shivalinga built in the cave melts within 4 days, then what will be the benefit of such development. Just 9 days ago, on June 29, when the first puja took place in the Amarnath cave, the size of the Shivalinga made of sacred ice was 12 feet. At that time, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha had participated in this first puja and 4 days later, Amarnath Yatra started from 3rd July.
The size started shrinking from July 3 itself.
The first group that reached Amarnath cave on 3rd July, says that the size of the holy Shivalinga started melting and shrinking on the same day, but the situation became more serious on 6th July. And this ‘Shivling’ melted more than 90 percent and became just less than 1 feet and it is not that this has happened for the first time.
In the year 2018, this same holy Shivalinga melted in just 29 days of the Yatra. Even when Covid came in 2020, it melted in 38 days. In 2022 it melted in 28 days and in 2024 it melted in just 1 week. This time also it seems that this Shivling will melt completely in 1 week and the main reason for this is the increasing number of devotees in Amarnath cave and the increasing facilities for them.
The number of Amarnath pilgrims is increasing
Till two decades ago, only a maximum of 1 lakh devotees were able to have darshan of Baba Barfani. But as the travel became easier with the increase in facilities, the crowd of devotees started increasing. In the year 2003, 1 lakh 70 thousand people had reached Amarnath Yatra, but in 2011 and 2012 this figure reached more than 6 lakh.
In the year 2016, when terrorist Burhan Wani was killed, the number of devotees reduced to less than 2.5 lakhs, but after the year 2022, it increased again and last year 4 lakh 10 thousand people had performed Amarnath Yatra.
The size of Shivalinga was once up to 22 feet.
The big thing is that earlier when less devotees used to come, the size of Shivling was 18 to 22 feet, but now this Shivling is maximum of 12 feet and it also melts before time. The main reason for this is that the temperature is increasing rapidly where the Amarnath cave is located at an altitude of about 18 thousand feet. This is happening due to climate change and global warming and is also happening due to increasing crowd of people.
Till two decades ago, the route of Amarnath Yatra was completely natural. There were paths made of mud and rocks and it was not easy for people to reach the Amarnath cave at such a height, but later gradually everything started changing. For example, the path from Panchtarni to the cave was a natural path made of stones and flowing with glacier water.
But now solar street lights, resting places, power lines, machines like JCB and work of widening the road by cutting mountains have been done on this route, due to which there have been many changes in the nature of this place. The effect of these changes is that whereas earlier all the surrounding mountains were laden with snow, today the same mountains have started appearing dry and full of mud.
This has happened because the nature of this area is changing rapidly and due to increasing crowd of humans here, the situation is such that people are able to reach Amarnath cave even without warm clothes.

10 years ago, when people used to go on Amarnath Yatra, they had to wear thermal clothes, full sleeve jacket, heavy shoes, cap and gloves. And this was also necessary because this entire area used to be covered with snow, but now when there is not much cold left in this area, people are seen traveling without warm clothes.
Temperature also increased on Mahagunas top
Not only this, the Mahagunas mountain where it is believed that Lord Shiva had left his son Ganeshji, that Mahagunas top was also covered with snow earlier, but now the average temperature there has also increased. This is happening in the Himalayan region, due to which the 10 glaciers around Amarnath cave have also started melting.
In simple language, just as frozen ice starts melting when kept outside, in the same way huge glaciers also start melting due to excessive heat and temperature. This is what is happening in Amarnath right now.
This change happening in the Himalinga of Amarnath cave is forcing one to think. If today this Himlinga is melting within a week, then in future due to global warming it is possible that this Shivlinga may not be formed at all…
