1. Lieutenant Vinay Narwal Time has passed, but it seems as if the pain has remained the same.
26-year-old Lieutenant Vinay Narwal from Haryana was also among those who lost his life in Pahalgam. When his father Rajesh Narwal mentions his son, his throat chokes and words start flowing in tears. It is said, ‘The son came and went like an angel… now only the endless journey of his memories remains.’
Lieutenant Vinay was a resident of Karnal. The marriage took place 6 days before the Pahalgam attack. He had gone to Kashmir with his wife Himanshi. He was the only son of his parents. Had joined the Navy only three years ago.
Father says- Amidst the wedding preparations, Vinay, his maternal uncle and I were going to Delhi for shopping. Then Vinay had told about the future plan on the way. He had said that he had decided what the names of the children would be. What is your investment plan?
How will life be after the age of 50? He also talked about rebuilding the house. It seems as if our pain has stopped in that scene, our heart starts crying every now and then. In the midst of this deep sorrow, recitation of Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta is our only support.
The father is proud that the government gave a befitting reply to the terrorists with ‘Operation Sindoor’, but he still has a grudge. They want that a medical college or university should be named in Vinay’s memory, so that his spirit of service remains immortal. On May 1, Vinay’s birthday, the family will remember their ‘angel’ by organizing a blood donation camp.

40 year old Bitan Adhikari, resident of Kolkata, was a software engineer. He was working in TCS in Florida, USA. Had gone to Kashmir for holidays with his wife and 3 year old son. He was shot in front of his wife and child.
“For whom should I make it now?” says Maya Adhikari, 75, in her deserted house in south Kolkata. The one who was fond of food, went away…. These words express his pain. The news of the death of son Bitan Adhikari on 22 April 2025 devastated the family. Bitan, who returned from America, had promised to meet his mother on April 15 on ‘Poila Baisakh’, but his body returned home.
Even after a year, the mother’s grief has not diminished. She says that now she neither drinks milk nor makes sweets – because there is no one to eat. Bitan, who went to America in 2016, had this house built in 2018 and he had purchased everything in the house. No photograph of him was kept in the house because it was unbearable for the mother to see it.
Maya Adhikari talks on the phone to her daughter-in-law, who is taking care of the young child after losing her husband. She is trying to overcome this grief by worshiping her Gurudev and will worship at home in the memory of her son on 22nd April.
3. Santosh Jagdale saved his daughter, but was killed himself
Santosh Jagdale, a 50-year-old interior designer from Pune, Maharashtra, who lost his life in Pahalgam, had gone for a walk with his family and a friend. He bravely faced the terrorists and died saving his daughter’s life. His friend also died. His sacrifice is now an inspiration to the family.
‘Papa gave courage even at the last moment… He stood for us saying ‘Don’t be afraid, I am here’. Asavari Jagdale, who lost her father Santosh Jagdale in the Pahalgam attack, becomes emotional while telling this. Those moments when he went out with his family changed his life forever. The family lost its support due to the sudden attack amidst the beauty of Baisaran Valley. The mother’s world shattered in an instant and the grandmother lost her son. ‘For a daughter, her father is her hero, for us he was everything,’ says Asawari’s voice.
In the beginning he had very little money, later he got government help, but the mental pain was much deeper. After struggling for about 11 and a half months, he got a job in Pune Municipal Corporation, which provided support to the family. Asavari says, ‘Papa is not with me today, but his words are always with me.’ After this painful experience, Asawari has resolved to do something for the society. She has decided to spend a part of her salary on the needy. ‘Now the responsibility of the house is mine and service to the country is my first goal,’ she says firmly.
4. Shubham Dwivedi’s family organizes a banquet on the 22nd of every month.
This is Shubham’s father Sanjay Dwivedi. They say that it was difficult for Shubham’s mother to overcome the grief of her son’s death.
Shubham Dwivedi, a 30-year-old businessman from Kanpur, and his wife Aishanya had gone to Pahalgam along with 11 members of the family. The terrorists first asked his name, then killed him by shooting him in the head. They got married only two months after the incident.
Aishanya says, ‘If her husband is killed in front of her life partner, then no one can ever forget it. This is a lifelong sorrow. I don’t think I can tell you any single moment, because when you lose someone, every day becomes difficult. Be it a festival or anniversary.
Only two months had passed since our marriage. I did not celebrate any anniversary with him, nor any festival. Whenever I do some good work, I feel like telling it, then I wonder who to tell it to. I missed Shubham the most on 26th February, his birthday and on 12th February, the day we got married.
At the same time, father Sanjay Dwivedi starts work only after looking at his son’s photo in the office. On the 22nd of every month, they organize a feast in the village in memory of Shubham. He says- A program is being organized in Kanpur on 22nd April to pay tribute to Shubham.
We have been able to bear that sorrow because of the courage, support and strength that the people of Kanpur have given us. We had demanded to give martyr status to Shubham and are demanding it even now. Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana has also built a gate in Shubham’s native village.
