After the Gen-Z movement against corruption, nepotism and social media ban in Nepal, thousands of youth chose the country’s new PM through voting on virtual pole on American messaging app discord. This is the first time that a leader has been elected in a democratic country.
This revolution in Nepal is being considered as the first step towards young-elevated digital democracy. This online bodle was organized by Nepal’s youth organization ‘Hami Nepal’. It is a Gen-Z group, with more than 160,000 members.

The 25 -year -old law graduate Regina Basnet, who was involved in the Discord debate at that time, said, ‘People were learning moving forward. Many of us did not know what it means to dissolve Parliament or form an interim government. But we were asking questions, taking answers from experts and trying to solve it together.
“This was a protest – no organized movement -” 26 -year -old protestor Vishal Sapkota told ABC Australia. He further said, “To be honest, the protesters did not expect that the government would fall in just two days, so they were not ready to some extent for this fast success.”
Journalist Prannoy Rana said that platforms like discords gave the youth a chance to speak openly, but also threatened fake accounts and misinformation. The protesting leader tried to stop fake news by creating a ‘fact check’ sub-room. Some people also raised the demand for the return of the monarchy, but it remained in a minority.
Gen-Z chose Sushila with consensus on the server
By September 10, the server was consensus on the server. Former Chief Justice of Nepal Sushila Karki was elected the next leader. According to the report of South China Morning Post, Karki cast 7,713 votes before reaching 50% of the votes.
After this Sushila’s name was finalized for the post of PM. He was sworn in by the President on 12 September. She became the first woman PM of the country in 220 years of history.
