Balen Shah became the Prime Minister of Nepal on March 5 this year. After about 2 months, he addressed the Parliament for the first time.
Nepal Prime Minister Balen Shah said on Sunday that not only India has occupied Nepali land, but Nepal has also occupied some Indian areas.
Balen was addressing the Nepalese Parliament for the first time two months after becoming PM. According to Kathmandu Post, in response to a question during this time, he said that he got information about this after becoming the Prime Minister. Both the countries should jointly investigate this matter.
On the trade between India and China through Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura route, Shah said that the dispute will be resolved through diplomatic talks. Nepal has sent a diplomatic note to India on this issue and a reply has also been received from India.
Shah said that the Lipulekh controversy dates back to the times of British India. Therefore, Nepal has not only discussed this matter with India and China but also with Britain.
While being the mayor of Kathmandu, Balen Shah had put a map of Greater Nepal in his office. In this, the area from Western Kangra in Himachal to Eastern Teesta in West Bengal has been described as part of Greater Nepal.
Addressed Parliament for the first time
Nepal’s Prime Minister Balen Shah addressed the Parliament of Nepal on Sunday. This is the first time that Nepal’s Prime Minister Shah has spoken in the Parliament after assuming power after the elections held in March this year.
In fact, the MPs of the opposition parties were continuously demanding that the Prime Minister should come to the Parliament and present his views on important issues of the country. After this Balen Shah addressed the Parliament and answered the questions of the MPs.
Since Balen Shah became the Prime Minister of Nepal in March 2026, the traditional diplomatic and strategic relations between India and Nepal have seen a lot of change and discomfort.
4 incidents which affected India-Nepal relations
1. Objection to Mansarovar Yatra from Lipulekh Pass: The Balen Shah administration expressed strong objection to the decision by India and China to restart the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through Lipulekh Pass. 2. Not giving appointment to the Indian Foreign Secretary: India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri was scheduled to visit Nepal in May 2026, so that he could extend an official invitation to Balen Shah to visit India on behalf of Prime Minister Modi. But PM Balen Shah refused to give time to the Indian Foreign Secretary to meet, due to which India had to postpone the visit.
3. Not having a separate courtesy meeting with the Indian Ambassador: Whenever a new government is formed in Nepal, as per tradition the new PM has a separate courtesy meeting with the Indian Ambassador. However, Balen Shah met all the foreign ambassadors together (collectively) instead of meeting the Indian ambassador separately. This sent a message to New Delhi that its government does not want to give any special or traditional preference to India.
4. Policy of no foreign tour in the first year: It has generally been a tradition in Nepal that the Prime Minister visits India after assuming office. But as soon as Balen took charge, he announced that he would not go on an official tour to any country in the first year of his tenure.
