The children of Britain’s Prince Harry and Meghan are changing schools after just two days because of concerns over the security arrangements needed to transport them, a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said on Monday.
Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, started school in September after Harry and his family returned to Britain following six years in California.
The location of their new home and details of the school have been kept private. However, the distance between their home and the first school, along with heavy traffic in the area, raised concerns for the family’s security team.
Security Concerns Behind Move
“The decision for the children to move school was taken following a discussion with the family’s security team about the practicalities of their current arrangements,” the spokesperson said.
The couple thanked the teachers and staff at the school, stressing that the decision was not a criticism of the institution.
“The parents remain extremely grateful to all the teachers and staff for the love, care and effort they have shown their family,” the spokesperson said. “This decision should in no way be interpreted as a reflection on the school or the exceptional care the children have received there.”
Harry and Meghan stepped down from royal duties and moved to the US in 2020. Their decision led to strained relations with the royal family, as the couple later made a series of critical comments about the monarchy.
Harry’s Security Arrangements Under Review
The family’s return to Britain last month came as a surprise, with King Charles reportedly learning about the move only days before it became public. Harry and Meghan are not living in a royal residence and remain non-working royals.
Their status as private citizens was recently confirmed in a letter authorised by Charles and sent to senior British officials. The couple’s spokesperson said the move had come as a surprise to Harry and Meghan.
Harry has also been involved in a long-running dispute over his security arrangements in Britain. He has criticised the decision to remove his automatic police protection after he stepped down as a working royal.
A bespoke security arrangement is now in place for him, while his security is being reviewed by a government committee. Meghan’s security arrangements are also being reviewed for the first time since the couple left Britain.
