Marco Rubio India Visit Live Updates: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to travel to India to meet External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon, October 20. This visit comes amid tensions in ties between the two nations over visa curbs and tariff threats.
Rubio’s scheduled meeting with EAM Jaishankar is being seen as an effort to repair bilateral ties. According to officials, the two sides are expected to discuss “energy, trade and investment, defence, critical and emerging technologies”.
Rubio, however, will not travel to Delhi. Instead, he will go to Jamnagar on Wednesday, October 21, where he is expected to visit a major oil refinery.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Rubio will land in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon around 2.15 PM. He will meet Jaishankar around 4 PM, and also pay tribute to the 26/11 memorial at Taj Palace hotel.
‘Close To Finalising Trade Deal’
Ahead of his India visit, Marco Rubio said that New Delhi and Washington are “close to finalising a trade deal”.
“We’re trying to finalise a trade deal with India right now. We’re very close to doing that,” he said, adding that the ongoing negotiations are among the factors being considered by US President Donald Trump while making decisions on sanctions waivers related to Russian oil and gas.
“That’s one of the things we take into consideration when the President makes a decision about national security waivers and things of that nature,” he said.
