It has been 15 years since the issue of Aadhaar number to every citizen in the country started. During this period, more than 142 crore Aadhar cards were issued, but despite the death of more than 8 crore holders, only 1.83 crore cards have been deactivated. The bases of about 6 crore dead people are still active. Due to this, fears of bank fraud, fake accounts and irregularities in benefits of government schemes have increased.
According to Bhuvanesh Kumar, CEO of Unique Identification Authority of India i.e. UIDAI, till now UIDAI has received data of 1.55 crore dead people from the Registrar General of India (RGI). Between November 2024 and September 2025, 38 lakh more deaths were added to the list.
Of these, the identity of 1.17 crore has been confirmed and their Aadhaar cards have been deactivated. The authority estimates that 2 crore cards will become inactive by December.
UIDAI started the death notification portal on its website four months ago so that relatives can deactivate the Aadhaar of the deceased online. So far only 3,000 people have registered this information, out of which only 500 cases have been confirmed and their cards have been deactivated.
UIDAI CEO said – Death registration is still very casual
Bhuvnesh Kumar said, Aadhaar was started in 2010. At the same time, around 8 crore Aadhaar holders are estimated to have died since 2016. Data for only 25 states is available from the Civil Registration System. The work of collecting data from remaining states is going on.
He further said that when Aadhaar started being issued, annual deaths in the country were around 56 lakh. Gradually the figure reached 85 lakhs. Therefore, we are assuming eight crore deaths since 2016. Death registration is still very casual.
48 lakh records not matching; 80 dead alive
- About 48 lakh names have not been matched yet. Of these, 4–5% records could not be matched due to information entered in the regional language.
- In this process, 80 such cases came to light in which people who were declared dead were later found alive. Now these cases are under investigation.
Verification of 8.3 lakh Aadhaar numbers of those who have crossed 100 years.
- In the UIDAI database, 8.30 lakh Aadhaar holders are above 100 years of age.
- Of these, maximum card holders include 74,000 in Maharashtra, 67,000 in UP, 64,000 in Andhra and 62,000 in Telangana.
- Of these, states have so far confirmed only 3,086 cases. Of these, 629 were alive, 783 were dead and information about 1,674 was not found.
Indications of irregularities in banks and ration system also
- Out of 22 crore Aadhaar-linked accounts of SBI, accounts of 8 lakh deceased were closed.
- Out of 14 crore accounts of PNB, 4 lakh deaths were confirmed.
- Out of 80 crore ration cards related to PDS, cards of 4.5 lakh deceased were found active.
- Confirmation of death of 22 lakh out of two crore pensioners. Insurance companies have information about 5 lakh dead people.
