The situation is such that about 3,850 MLD (million liters per day) water is supplied to Mumbai every day. Of this, about 30% is considered to be leakage. About Rs 1.5 lakh crore has been spent under this project in the last 10 years, yet the situation has not changed. In cities like Bhopal-Indore, water leakage ranges from 35%-65%. Bhopal had even claimed to reduce drinking water leakage to 16% by 2021. But according to CAG report 2019, water leakage in Bhopal is 48%. In Indore it is up to 65%. Out of the water that is being supplied to Mumbai by spending Rs 16,092 crore, about Rs 4,500 crore is being wasted due to leakage and theft.
