In almost all the big cities of the country, 25-60% of water is being wasted. Either there are major leakages in the drinking water lines or illegal connections have been made in the pipeline. The situation is such that about 3,850 MLD (million liters per day) water is supplied to Mumbai every day. Of this, about 30% is considered to be leakage. Every day about 1000 mld of water is being wasted due to pipeline leakage and other means. This wasted water is more than the total daily requirement of Indore-Bhopal. These two cities require only 900 MLD water daily. In 2016, the urban bodies started the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) project under projects like Smart City and AMRUT 2.0. Under this, the target was to reduce leakage and theft of non-revenue water (NRW) to 20%. About Rs 1.5 lakh crore has been spent under this project in the last 10 years, yet the situation has not changed. In cities like Bhopal-Indore, water leakage ranges from 35%-65%. Bhopal had even claimed to reduce drinking water leakage to 16% by 2021. But according to CAG report 2019, water leakage in Bhopal is 48%. In Indore it is up to 65%. In Indore, it costs Rs 29 per thousand liters to bring Narmada water from Jalud to the city, 70 km away, and pump it to a height of 600 meters. It costs money. In this, the electricity bill alone is Rs 25 crore every month. Due to wastage of 65% water, there is a loss of Rs 15 crore. Out of the water that is being supplied to Mumbai by spending Rs 16,092 crore, about Rs 4,500 crore is being wasted due to leakage and theft. The annual expenditure on water supply in Bengaluru is Rs 10 thousand crore. Is. Leakage is 35%. Means wastage of Rs 3,500 crore.
