There has been a 6 percent decline in the number of crimes registered across the country in 2024. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 58.85 lakh cases were registered in 2024 as compared to 62.41 lakh cases in 2023. This information was given in the report released on Wednesday.

According to the report, the crime rate i.e. the number of cases registered per one lakh population has also decreased. It will decrease from 448.3 in 2023 to 418.9 in 2024. It is clear that along with the total cases, the crime rate has also declined.

Total 27,049 cases of murder

A total of 27,049 murder cases were registered in 2024. This is 2.4% less than in 2023. According to the report, the biggest reason for murder cases was mutual dispute. After this, reasons like revenge or enmity and greed came to the fore.

1.5% decline in crimes against women

  • There was also a decline of 1.5% in crimes against women. The rate of crime against women reduced from 66.2 in 2023 to 64.6 in 2024. In 2024, 4.41 lakh such cases were registered, whereas in 2023 this number was 4.48 lakh.
  • Crimes against Scheduled Castes (SC) also declined by 3.6%. In 2024, 55,698 cases were registered, while in 2023 the number was 57,789.
  • A huge decline of 23.1% was recorded in crimes against Scheduled Tribes (ST). In 2024, 9,966 such cases were reported, while in 2023, 12,960 cases were registered.
  • The biggest decline was seen in cases related to ‘hurt’. These cases decreased from 6.36 lakh in 2023 to 4.41 lakh in 2024, i.e. a decrease of 30.58%.
