Diwali is not only a festival of lights and happiness, but it has also always been a big occasion for Bollywood. Every year many big films are released on this festival. This year in 2025, Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna’s film ‘Thama’ and Harshvardhan Rane and Sonam Bajwa’s film ‘Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat’ are being released on the special occasion of Diwali on 21 October 2025.

Although this is not the first time, in the last few years films have come face to face many times on the occasion of Diwali. In the year 2012, there was a fierce competition between the films of Ajay Devgan and Shahrukh Khan.

Let’s take a look at the films released on Diwali in the last 20 years and their clashes…

Movies and clashes released on Diwali

Last year, during Diwali, on November 1, ‘Singham Again’ and ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’ were released together. Both were liked by the audience. ‘Singham Again’ had earned around Rs 390 crore worldwide and ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’ had earned around Rs 420 crore.

‘Ram Setu’ and ‘Thank God’ released on 25 October 2022. Akshay Kumar’s film earned around Rs 93 crore, while Ajay Devgan’s film did a business of around Rs 50 crore.

‘Housefull 4’, ‘Made in China’ and ‘Saand Ki Aankh’ were released on 25 October 2019. Of these, Akshay Kumar’s film did the highest business of around Rs 280-295 crore. At the same time, ‘Made in China’ earned around Rs 13 crore and ‘Saand Ki Aankh’ earned around Rs 30 crore.

In the year 2017, ‘Golmaal Again’ and ‘Secret Superstar’ were released on the occasion of Diwali. Ajay Devgan’s film had earned Rs 311 crore and Aamir Khan’s film had earned Rs 977 crore including China.

On the occasion of Diwali, in the year 2016, ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ and ‘Shivaay’ were released on 28 October. Ranbir Kapoor’s film earned around Rs 250 crore while Ajay Devgan’s film earned around Rs 150 crore.

On 13 November 2012, the films ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ and ‘Son of Sardaar’ were released on the same day. Shahrukh’s film ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ earned around Rs 230 crore worldwide, while Ajay Devgan’s film ‘Son of Sardar’ earned around Rs 160 crore.

In the year 2010, ‘Golmaal 3’ and ‘Action Replay’ were released on the occasion of Diwali. ‘Golmaal 3’ did a business of Rs 167 crore, while ‘Action Replay’ which earned Rs 48 crore was a flop.

In 2009, ‘All the Best’, ‘Blue’ and ‘Main Aur Mrs. Khanna’ were released on 16 October. ‘All the Best’ with a budget of Rs 41 crore had earned approximately Rs 61.78 crore, ‘Blue’ with a budget of Rs 75 crore had earned Rs 63.92 crore, and ‘Main Aur Mrs. Khanna’ with a budget of Rs 38 crore had earned approximately Rs 14.61 crore.

In 2007, Shahrukh Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’ and Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Saawariya’ were released on 9 November. Worldwide, ‘Om Shanti Om’ earned around Rs 150 crore and ‘Saawariya’ earned around Rs 40 crore.

In 2006, two major films were released on the occasion of Diwali. Shahrukh Khan’s ‘Don’ earned around Rs 106 crore worldwide. At the same time, Salman and Akshay’s film ‘Jaan-e-Mann’ had earned around Rs 30 crore worldwide.

Three films were released in 2005. Akshay Kumar’s comedy film ‘Garam Masala’ was a hit. The film earned approximately Rs 64.65 crore worldwide.

Whereas, Salman’s ‘Kyun Ki…’ was a flop. The film earned approximately Rs 21 crore worldwide.

The multi-starrer ‘Shaadi No. 1’ comedy film was average. The film earned approximately Rs 22 crore worldwide.

Collection of other films released on Diwali

In 2023, Salman Khan’s film ‘Tiger 3’ was released on November 12 and it earned around Rs 450 crore.

Akshay Kumar’s ‘Sooryavanshi’ and Hollywood film ‘Internals’ were released on 5 November 2021. ‘Sooryavanshi’ earned Rs 294 crore and ‘Internals’ earned around Rs 35 crore in its lifetime collection in India.

At the same time, in 2020, no big film was released on Diwali due to the closure of theaters due to the Corona epidemic.

‘Thugs of Hindostan’, which released on Diwali in 2018, earned Rs 50.75 crore in its initial opening, but made only Rs 151 crore in India and Rs 322–335 crore worldwide in its lifetime against the budget of Rs 300 crore.

Salman Khan’s film ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ was released on 12 November on Diwali in 2015 and it earned more than Rs 400 crore worldwide at the box office.

Shahrukh Khan’s ‘Happy New Year’ was released on Diwali in 2014, which earned more than Rs 350 crore.

In 2013, Hrithik Roshan’s ‘Krrish 3’ did a worldwide business of more than Rs 350 crore.

‘Ra.One’ was released on 26 October 2011 on Diwali and earned over Rs 207 crore worldwide.

In 2008, Rohit Shetty’s film ‘Golmaal Returns’ was released on 29 October. The film earned approximately Rs 80 crore worldwide.
