The General Committee formed by the Central Government regarding the 113 year old Delhi Gymkhana Club has appealed to the government on Monday that the functioning of the club should not be affected. The committee said that if the government goes ahead with the encroachment action, the club should be given land at another location. Actually, ground rent of about Rs 48 crore is outstanding on the historic club located in Lutyens Delhi. The Land and Development Office (LDO) had sent notices to the club management in September 2025, March 2026 and April 2026. In the last notice issued in April, it was asked to deposit the outstanding amount within a week. It was also warned that if payment was not made, 27.3 acres of the club’s land would be taken back. After this, on May 22, the club was ordered to vacate the campus by June 5. Delhi Gymkhana Club was established during the British period. It started in 1913 under the name Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club. After independence, its name was changed to Delhi Gymkhana Club. The existing buildings were built in the 1930s. Club said- Financial condition has improved in 4 years. The General Committee said that it is taking over the operation of the club after the order of National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) in April 2022. The administrative and financial condition of the club has improved in the last 4 years. The club had a loss of Rs 12.39 crore in 2021-22, while a profit of Rs 9.25 crore is expected in 2023-24. This reform was done without increasing new membership. The committee also said that the members appointed by the ministry are working on an honorary basis and do not receive any salary or financial benefits. According to the committee: Members called the action illegal. In the meeting held on Monday, the club members called the action of occupation illegal. He says that he was not informed about the dues and notices earlier. The members said that the club is not just land but a heritage related to sports and cultural activities. Instead of closing the club, he demanded administrative reforms. The General Committee said that shifting the club to another place would entail huge expenses in rebuilding the old infrastructure. This may also affect the employment of about 600 employees associated with the club. Constant talks are being held with LDO and Urban Development Ministry officials to maintain the club at its current location. The club has been a symbol of high-society status for the last 113 years. The club has long been a favorite haunt of bureaucrats, army chiefs, judges, politicians, industrialists and old business families. Membership here is considered as prestigious as any big government post. Every year only 100 people get membership. It is considered very difficult to get entry into this club which has about 1200 members. One had to wait for 20 to 30 years for membership. Every year only about 100 new people are able to take membership. The 40-40-20 rule remained in force at the club for decades. 40% membership was for civil services, 40% for defense services and the remaining 20% for others. Earlier, children of club members were also given priority. This made it more difficult for outsiders to become members. Before membership, there was also a process called ‘at home’, where existing members would decide whether the new person was of their status or not. The club also remained in controversies due to this high-society status culture.
