Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has prepared a plan to flee to Russia amid the ongoing protests in the country. If the demonstrations cannot be stopped, Khamenei will leave the country.
This claim has been made in an intelligence report received by the British newspaper ‘The Times’. According to the report, 86-year-old Khamenei may leave Tehran with a small group of about 20 people, including his son and successor Mujtaba.
Protests against Khamenei have been going on in Iran for eight days. According to reports of human rights activists, so far demonstrations have taken place at more than 222 places in 78 cities. At least 20 people have died in these, three of whom are children. At the same time, 44 minors have been arrested.

Demonstrations in Iran started on 28 December. Then it was started by businessmen in the capital Tehran. Now thousands of GenZ have also joined it.
Claim- Kept properties and cash abroad to leave the country
Khamenei controls billions of dollars in assets through several charitable foundations. Among these, an organization named ‘Setad’ is prominent, whose value has already been estimated at several billion dollars.
The report also said that relatives of many senior leaders associated with the regime are already living in America, Canada and Gulf countries.
According to intelligence sources, under this plan, properties, assets and cash have been secured in advance in foreign countries, so that if needed, they can leave the country immediately.
Resentment among common people increased due to inflation in Iran
GenZ is in anger across the country. The reason for this has been economic crisis. The Iranian currency rial fell to about 1.45 million per US dollar in December 2025, an all-time low.
The value of the rial has almost halved since the beginning of the year. Inflation has reached its peak here. The prices of food items have increased by 72% and the prices of medicines have increased by 50%.
Apart from this, the government’s proposal to increase taxes by 62% in the budget of 2026 has created huge resentment among the common people.
America has warned of attacks on protesters
Last week, US President Trump warned Iran that the US would react strongly if action was taken against the protesters.
He wrote on social media, we are fully prepared. If Iran starts killing people like before, it will have to pay a very heavy price.
US-based human rights organization HRAI and Oslo-based Hangaav have alleged that security forces fired indiscriminately on civilians, in which even children were not spared.
These demonstrations spread across the country started after the fall of the Iranian currency and rising inflation. The protesters are raising slogans against the government and demanding regime change.
At the same time, according to Iran’s official Fars news agency, 250 policemen and 45 members of the Basij force have been injured in the demonstrations.

To control the protests, the police have fired on people several times.
Iran’s ‘Axis of Resistance’ also weakened
The position of Iran’s allied countries and groups has weakened. Hamas has suffered heavy losses after the Israel-Hamas war that started in 2023. Many top leaders of Lebanon’s Hezbollah have been killed. The Syrian President was removed from power in December 2024. Air strikes have also been carried out on Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
The ‘Axis of Resistance’ is an informal alliance led by Iran. This includes those countries and organizations which are considered to be standing in opposition to America and Israel. The purpose of this alliance is to challenge the influence of America and Israel in the Middle East.
Apart from Iran, it mainly includes Hamas (Gaza), Hezbollah (Lebanon), Houthi rebels (Yemen) and earlier the Syrian government. Iran has been providing political support as well as arms, training and financial help to these groups.
India’s advisory- avoid non-essential travel
In view of the ongoing violent protests in Iran, the Indian government has advised its citizens to avoid non-essential travel there.
The Ministry of External Affairs issued this advisory on Monday. The Ministry of External Affairs also said that Indian citizens who are living in Iran on resident visa and have not yet registered with the embassy, should get registered as soon as possible.
Khamenei has been in supreme power in Iran for 35 years.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has held the position of supreme leader of Iran since the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989. During the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, Khamenei played a major role in the revolution when Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was ousted.
After the Islamic Revolution, Khamenei was made President in 1981. He remained in this post for 8 years. After the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Khomeini in 1989, he was made his successor.
According to BBC report, Ayatollah is a title of religious leader. According to Islamic law of Iran, it is necessary to be an Ayatollah to become the Supreme Leader.
That means only a religious leader can get the post of Supreme Leader. But when the law was amended to make Khamenei the Supreme Leader because he was not a religious leader.
