Differences between America and Israel regarding Iran are increasing. Meanwhile, there is growing concern within the US Defense Department (Pentagon) that Israel is trying to spy on US officials and the Trump government to gather inside information. According to NBC News report, two current and one former US officials said that the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) recently increased the level of counter-intelligence threat related to Israel to ‘critical’. This is considered the most serious alert of the agency. It is considered extremely extraordinary for such a thing to happen between very close allies like America and Israel. However, Israel has completely rejected these allegations. The Israeli Embassy says it does not spy on American officials and that its intelligence agencies keep an eye on enemies, not allies. Officials who do not use phones and computers The increased counterintelligence threat level could have the greatest impact on American officials who travel to Israel or have direct contact with Israeli officials. However, cooperation on intelligence sharing between America and Israel will continue for now. A US official told NBC that the US already takes special precautions during the visits of its senior officials to Israel. American officials avoid using their phones and laptops during this period. Instead they use makeshift mobile phones and separate computers. Many times they also avoid discussing sensitive issues in hotel rooms or in places where there may be a risk of surveillance. The reason for this is that Israeli intelligence agencies are considered very aggressive in gathering information. However, officials also said that there was no single major incident due to which the threat level was suddenly increased. Instead, the decision was taken based on a number of incidents and assessments. Trump had abused Netanyahu on the phone. This controversy has come to light at a time when differences are increasing between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding Iran. Trump is trying to reach a major deal with Iran after the April ceasefire, while Netanyahu believes Iran will not abide by any deal. Meanwhile, there have also been reports of differences of opinion between America and Israel regarding military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon. According to reports, recently there was a heated conversation on phone between Trump and Netanyahu. Trump later admitted that he had abused the Israeli Prime Minister. This intensified speculation that there were serious differences between the two leaders over Middle East strategy. Even though America and Israel are considered close friends, there is a long history of mistrust and espionage between the two countries at the intelligence level. American security agencies have raised the alert level several times in the past regarding Israel’s spying activities and there have been major disputes between the two. 1. Jonathan Pollard Case (1985) Jonathan Pollard worked in the US Naval Intelligence Agency. In 1985, he was accused of giving many confidential American documents to Israel. Pollard said that he wanted to help Israel, but America considered it espionage. During the investigation he was trying to seek refuge in the Israeli embassy, but was arrested. In 1987, the American court sentenced him to life imprisonment. This matter caused tension in the relations between America and Israel. Pollard was released on parole in 2015 after spending nearly 30 years in jail. In 2020, he moved to Israel, where he was welcomed as a national hero. This case is still counted among the biggest espionage cases in America, in which an American citizen spied for an ally country. This was the first time that America had raised its counter-intelligence surveillance regarding Israel to the highest level. 2. Ben-Ami Kadish Case (2008) Ben-Ami Kadish was a mechanical engineer who worked for the US Army. In 2008, he was accused of giving many confidential US documents to Israel in the 1980s. According to US investigative agencies, these documents included sensitive information related to missile defense systems, fighter planes and nuclear weapons. The allegation was that Kadish had handed this information to an Israeli contact. Kadish later pleaded guilty to one charge and was sentenced in 2009. However, considering his age, he was not sent to jail, but was given punishment like fine and surveillance. 3. Stingray spying controversy (2019) In 2019, a report appeared in the American media, which claimed that suspicious ‘Stingray’ devices were found around the White House and some sensitive areas of Washington. They were collecting information from nearby mobile phones by working like fake mobile towers. Investigative agencies suspected that Israel could be behind these devices and their purpose was to keep an eye on the activities and conversations of President Trump and his close officials. However, the US government has never publicly stated that Israel has been proven guilty. On the other hand, Israel completely rejected the allegations and said that it does not spy on America.
