Actress Urvashi Rautela recently clarified the controversy over the tricolor-inspired gown she wore at the grand finale of Miss Universe India 2026 in Jaipur. Urvashi said that it was not an exact copy of the national flag, but a couture design inspired by the tricolor. Actually, the grand finale of Miss Universe India 2026 was held on 23 August at Zee Studios, Jaipur. Former Miss Universe India Urvashi Rautela was part of the judging panel. She was also on the panel along with India’s first Miss Universe Sushmita Sen, Miss Universe India 2024 Rhea Singha, environmentalist and film producer Pragya Kapoor and former Miss India Universe and Miss Universe runner-up Celina Jaitley. Urvashi wore a tricolor inspired gown for the event. After this, some users on social media raised objection about this. One user wrote that wearing the Indian national flag as clothing or printing it directly on the dress material is not allowed under the Flag Code of India. Other users also expressed their displeasure about this. Urvashi said – The gown is not an exact copy of the national flag. In a conversation with Hindustan Times regarding the matter, Urvashi said that I carry my country with me not just as my nationality, but as a part of my identity. I wanted to wear something that not only reflected where I was from, but also what India meant to me. The idea of this couture dress came from this thought. Urvashi said the gown’s silhouette, color placement, embellishments, detailing and production were all designed with fashion in mind. According to her, it was not just about applying three colors to the dress, but about transforming the national sentiment into artistic expression. Responding to the controversy, he said that there are many clear differences between the Indian national flag and this gown. According to him, the gown is not an exact replica of the national flag, but a couture design using elements inspired by the tricolour. He told that deliberate changes were made in the color shades, direction, proportion, material and central symbol. Three colors and a central motif like circle have been used in the gown. According to Urvashi, the gown’s horizontal color stripes were made vertical, emblems were transformed into jewellery, and sequins and fringes were used. He said the orange is not real saffron, the green is a different shade, and the emblem deviates from official specifications. The outfit was designed by Belarusian designer Daria Chermashentseva’s DASHA Fashion Couture. Indian Flag Code The Flag Code of India, 2002 of the Government of India lays down the rules and provisions related to the use of the national flag. According to the Prevention of Insults to National Honor Act, 1971, the national flag should not form part of any dress or uniform and should not be embroidered or printed on cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins or any dress material. The law also states that the national flag should not be allowed to intentionally touch or be dragged on the ground, floor or water.
