World renowned tabla player and Padma Vibhushan Ustad Zakir Hussain has passed away. His family confirmed this on Monday morning. According to the family, Hussain was suffering from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

The family said that he was admitted to a hospital in San Francisco for the last two weeks. When his condition worsened, he was admitted to the ICU. He breathed his last there.

Zakir was born on 9 March 1951 in Mumbai. Ustad Zakir Hussain was awarded the Padma Shri in 1988, Padma Bhushan in 2002 and Padma Vibhushan in 2023.

His father’s name was Ustad Allah Rakha Qureshi and mother’s name was Biwi Begum. Zakir’s father Allah Rakha was also a tabla player. Zakir Hussain received his early education from St. Michael’s School in Mahim, Mumbai.

He did his graduation from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. Zakir Hussain did his first concert in America at the age of just 11. In 1973 he launched his first album ‘Living in the Material World’.

Wrong news of death came late on Sunday night

The news of his death also came late on Sunday night. India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting also shared a post regarding his demise. But later it was removed. After this, Zakir’s sister and nephew Aamir had declared the news of Zakir’s demise wrong. Zakir Hussain had received three Grammy Awards.

Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Lung disease

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a disease related to the lungs. In this, lung tissue gets damaged, which causes difficulty in breathing. Shortness of breath and phlegm in the throat are its initial symptoms.

Due to lung tissue damage, sufficient oxygen does not reach the blood. Due to this, there are problems in reaching oxygen to the organs of the body and gradually the organs also stop functioning.

Ustad Zakir Hussain used to start playing tunes with his fingers after seeing a flat place. Zakir Hussain had the talent of playing tunes since childhood. Seeing any flat place, he would start playing tunes with his fingers. Even the utensils were not left in the kitchen. He used to touch the pan, pot and plate, whatever he got.

Ustad Zakir Hussain was born on 9 March 1951 in Mumbai.

If he could not find a seat, he would spread newspapers on the floor and sleep. During this time, so that no one’s feet touched the tabla, he used to sleep with it in his lap.

At the age of 12, he got 5 rupees, which had the highest price. When Zakir Hussain was 12 years old, he went to a concert with his father. Music stalwarts like Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Bismillah Khan, Pandit Shanta Prasad and Pandit Kishan Maharaj had attended that concert.

Zakir Hussain went on stage with his father. After the performance was over, Zakir got Rs 5. Referring to this in an interview, he had said – I have earned a lot of money in my life, but those 5 rupees were the most valuable.

Ustad Zakir Hussain also has programs in foreign countries.

America also respects Zakir Hussain Zakir Hussain is also respected by the world’s most powerful country, America. In 2016, former US President Barack Obama invited him to the White House to participate in the All Star Global Concert. Zakir Hussain was the first Indian musician to receive this invitation.

Acted in Hollywood movie with Shashi Kapoor Zakir Hussain has also acted in some films. He debuted in the 1983 British film Heat and Dust. Shashi Kapoor also worked in this film.

Zakir Hussain also worked in a 1998 film Saaz. His opposite in this film was Shabana Azmi. Zakir Hussain played the role of Shabana’s lover in this film.

Zakir Hussain was also offered the role of Salim’s younger brother in the film Mughal-e-Azam (1960), but his father did not approve of it at that time. He wanted his son to concentrate only on music.
