Pyramid schemes not only lose money, but also break relationships and trust. TVF’s new web series ‘The Pyramid Scheme’ shows this truth. In conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, Ranveer Shorey, Alfia Jaffrey, Paramveer Singh Cheema and creator-director Shreyansh Pandey shared their experiences. Some lost lakhs of rupees in the name of modelling, while others faced false promises and fake offers. The artists talked about loss of trust, conflict, the reality of the industry and the impact of pyramid schemes. Question: Has anyone ever told you to just do this work and your life will change? Answer/Ranveer Shorey: This is often heard in our industry. It is said that this is a life-changing role, after this everything will change. Life changes, but not as much as it is said. After every project one has to prove oneself again. Once you fall down, it takes two-three years to stand up again. Question: Have you ever fallen prey to any scheme or hoax? Answer/Paramveer Singh Cheema: Yes, in the initial days I had fallen under the influence of a photographer. It was advised to make a portfolio for modeling. It was told that the photographer usually charges Rs 2 lakh, but would charge me Rs 1.25 lakh. I paid and got the shoot done. Later it was revealed that the photographer used to shoot for free. Gave 25 thousand rupees separately to the stylist. Altogether Rs 1.5 lakh was spent. Question: What was the most sad thing about that incident? Answer/Paramveer Singh Cheema: There was a loss of money, but more painful than that was the loss of trust. I thought people were helping me, but later I found out that I was being played. Question: Alfia, have you ever been a victim of any such scheme? Answer/Alfia Jafri: Not directly. But since childhood I have been hearing that just grow up a little, they will launch you and make you a heroine. Many such promises were made, but nothing happened. There came a time when I thought I don’t want to do all this. Question: Shreyansh, where did the idea of making ‘The Pyramid Scheme’ come from? Answer/Shreyansh Pandey: We did a lot of research on this topic. During my college days, I closely observed many such companies which showed big dreams to the youth. They were told that their personality would develop, they would get a job and their life would change. But in reality the entire system was created to trap people. Question: What is the biggest loss in a pyramid scheme? Answer/Shreyansh Pandey: It is not just money that is lost. The biggest loss is of relationships. People add their relatives and friends. When the scheme breaks, relationships also break. Money can be earned back, but broken trust cannot be recovered. Question: Ranveer, did you ever get your portfolio shot? Answer/Ranveer Shorey: Yes, I also got a portfolio made, but did not have the same experience as Paramveer. The most important thing for me is that when someone takes advantage of your innocence and trust, that is what hurts the most. Question: Has any incident of breaking trust ever happened to you? Answer/Ranveer Shorey: This did not happen to me much in the film industry, because I have been seeing this environment since childhood. Already knew about the tricks and schemes here. So it is not easy to fool me. Question: Alfia, when trust is broken, how should one recover from it? Answer/Alfia Jafri: Every person sees things differently. I used to trust many people earlier, but after some experiences I started trusting people less. Today I have very few friends. It was not easy for me to move forward, but everyone’s path is different. Question: Paramveer, what changed after the loss of trust? Answer/Paramveer Singh Cheema: When such experiences happen again and again, a person starts distancing himself from people. Sometimes I cannot trust even the right people. This happened with me too. Question: Does a person become stronger with time? Answer/Ranveer Shorey: Absolutely. With age and experience your ‘skin’ becomes thicker. After getting hurt again and again, you start understanding things better. Question: What is the strangest thing you saw related to the pyramid scheme? Answer/Shreyansh Pandey: We saw many such videos on the internet. A woman was claiming that she travels abroad so much that she no longer requires a passport and visa. It is surprising to hear such claims. Question: Is networking or talent more important in the industry? Answer/Ranveer Shorey: Both are necessary. Paramveer Singh Cheema: Experience is also important. Alfia Jafri: I hope talent is more important in my case. Question: Does everything become possible just by having contacts? Answer/Ranveer Shorey: It is a reality not only of the film industry but also of the country that contacts are useful in many places. Question: Have you ever faced fake casting calls or false promises? Answer/Alfia Jafri: Yes. Once I got a call that they wanted to cast me for ‘House of the Dragon’. I got very excited, but later I found out that it was a fake call. Question: Finally, is more acting in the industry done in front of the camera or behind it? Answer/Ranveer Shorey: It happens only in front of the camera. In the beginning, people also act behind the camera, but later they understand that there is no benefit in it. Question: Why should audiences watch ‘The Pyramid Scheme’? Answer/Shreyansh Pandey: Because this is not just a scam story. This is the story of people who put their dreams, money and above all relationships at stake.
