Skipper Harmanpreet Singh and forward Sukhjeet Singh scored a brace each as India defeated a youthful China 5-2 in front of the home crowd on Thursday to register their second successive victory at the Asian Champions Trophy.

Sukhjeet scored two superb field goals in the 12th and 34th minutes, while Harmanpreet converted penalty corners in the 27th and 31st minutes. Jugraj Singh (47th) also scored from a set piece for the hosts at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium.

China’s two goals came through penalty corners converted by Peng Yang in the 26th minute and Chongcong Chen in the 36th.

India had opened their campaign with a dominant 13-0 victory over Bangladesh, while China suffered a narrow 5-4 loss to Asian Games silver medallists Malaysia on Tuesday.

India will next play Japan on Friday, while China will be up against South Korea.

India dominated from the outset, making multiple circle penetrations but failing to create a clear-cut scoring chance until the 13th minute.

In the 13th minute, Jugraj delivered a weighted scoop from deep into the Chinese circle, where Sukhjeet controlled the ball before lifting it over goalkeeper Huanyu Wu to give India the lead.

China earned their first chance through a penalty corner in the 18th minute, but India’s defence stood firm to deny the visitors.

India won consecutive penalty corners in the 20th minute but couldn’t capitalise, with skipper Harmanpreet sending his flick wide on the second attempt.

The young and inexperienced Chinese team deserves credit for thwarting multiple Indian raids before drawing level in the 26th minute through a penalty corner.

Peng Yang converted China’s second penalty corner with a drag-flick to the right of Indian goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak to bring his team level.

But a minute later, India restored their lead when Harmanpreet found the back of the net with a powerful low flick from the hosts’ third penalty corner.
