US President Donald Trump on Sunday ordered the Pentagon to reduce joint military exercises with South Korea. Trump said South Korea had refused to help the US effort to rid Iran of nuclear weapons. North Korea on Friday threatened to take tough measures against America and South Korea. He described the military exercises as preparation for an aggressive war and said that this was increasing instability in the region. Trump described the exercise as expensive and unfair. Trump said in a social media post that he had asked the President of South Korea to support America in this effort, but he refused. He said these military exercises are costly and send the wrong message to North Korea. These 11-day military exercises involving 18 thousand soldiers of South Korea were to start this week. Trump said that it is no longer possible to cancel them completely, so he has ordered War Secretary Pete Hegseth to significantly reduce the exercises. The exercise will strengthen the role of both countries in regional peace. American and South Korean armies were to practice military operations together in different conditions. This involved live-fire, crossing flooded terrain and delivering military equipment. The US Army said that this will strengthen the role of both the countries in regional peace and security. Trump and Kim have met three times. Trump met North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un three times during his first term. North Korea’s nuclear program was discussed in these meetings and the last meeting of the two was in 2019. A day before his announcement of reducing practice, he had posted a photo of himself with Kim. Trump had written with the photo that there is a very good relationship between the two leaders, but the face does not look friendly in this photo. Trump has already announced to stop military exercises. This is not the first time that Trump has tried to end military exercises between America and South Korea. During his first term, he made a sudden announcement and termed these war exercises as provocative. After meeting Kim Jong-un in Singapore in 2018, Trump told reporters, we will stop war exercises, which will save us a lot of money. This will continue until we feel that future negotiations are not going in the right direction.
