Both the leaders have described each other in public forums as close friends and strategic partners. According to the Kremlin, there is not only formal diplomacy but also continuous personal communication between the two leaders. In the video meeting held in February 2026, Xi Jinping had invited Putin to visit China, which Putin immediately accepted. The two leaders are also often seen together at BRICS, Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and Asia-Pacific forums. In international affairs, Russia and China have been presenting themselves as supporters of the multipolar world order in the face of pressure from America and Western countries. Multipolar world order means a world where power is distributed not just in one country but among many big countries. China-Russia economic relations have strengthened significantly in the last few years due to shared concern about American influence. There have been frequent high-level meetings between the two countries on issues like defence, foreign policy, law and order and economic development. Trade between China and Russia has increased rapidly after the start of the Ukraine war. China has increased the purchase of oil, coal and gas from Russia. At the same time, China is also exporting cars, electronics and other big items to Russia. According to official figures, trade between the two countries reached US$228.1 billion last year. Russia got a trade surplus of $ 21.49 billion, which is 55% more than in 2024. However, Western countries have accused China of providing economic support to Russia during the Ukraine war. Russia has been trying to advance the ‘Power of Siberia-2’ gas pipeline project for a long time. This is a huge gas pipeline project, which Russia and China are building together. Its objective is to transport Russian gas directly to China, so that energy cooperation between the two countries can be further strengthened. According to reports, through this pipeline, about 50 billion cubic meters of natural gas can be sent every year from Russia’s Yamal Peninsula to North China via Mongolia. With this much gas, the needs of 15 to 20 crore houses can be met in a year. A pipeline is already running between the two countries, named Power of Siberia-1. It supplies gas from the eastern part of Russia to China, which started in December 2019. The second pipeline will bring gas from the western part of Russia. Relief for Russia from Iran crisis and oil prices. The effect of increasing tension between America, Israel and Iran is now visible on the world’s energy market. Concern about oil supply has increased due to the situation of almost closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This has also deepened the threat of economic recession across the world. Experts say that currently Russia has got some benefit due to increase in oil and gas prices. Russia is among the countries with the world’s largest oil and natural gas reserves. However, Russia is still facing economic sanctions from the US and European countries due to the Ukraine war. The impact of these sanctions remains constant on the Russian economy.
