The US Supreme Court refused to lift the ban on President Donald Trump’s attempt to tighten rules for voting by mail.

The court on Monday upheld the lower court’s decision. The Supreme Court’s decision was 7-2. Two judges opposed it.

The matter is related to the midterm elections to be held in November. Trump issued the order in March. They wanted the states to give the list of people sending votes by mail to the US Postal Service (USPS).

Trump said that new rules are necessary to prevent irregularities in voting by mail. Opponents said that these rules can prevent even legitimate votes and that the President is interfering excessively in the electoral systems of the states. The Supreme Court has not yet given permission to implement Trump’s rules.

USPS could stop ballot under Trump’s rule

If a ballot did not conform to the new rules or the voter’s name was not found in the prescribed list, the USPS could stop that ballot.

States governed by the Democratic Party and organizations working for voting rights had opposed these rules. He said that this may increase the problems of the people during the elections.

Court raised questions on time

The biggest question before the US Supreme Court on the issue of postal voting was time. There is still some time left for the November elections and the process of sending ballots has started in many states.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh said Trump’s plan could be implemented in the future, but it is difficult to implement it right before the November election. Election officials do not have the necessary time to prepare and implement the new system.

Trump had earlier also raised questions on postal voting.

After the 2020 presidential election, Trump raised questions on postal voting. He continued to claim without evidence that there were irregularities in the elections and that his victory was snatched away.

However, Trump himself has also cast his vote by post. This year he voted by mail in Florida’s Republican primary.

USPS also expressed concern over Trump’s decision

A USPS whistleblower had also expressed concern about Trump’s new system. He had said that the new technical system has been prepared in a hurry. If there is any discrepancy in this then the ballots of lakhs of people will not be able to reach on time.

In the new system, the barcode present on the ballot envelope and the voter’s information were to be linked to an online system. Such a big change a few weeks before the elections was a challenge even for the officials.

Midterm elections will be held in America in November

Midterm elections will be held in America on 3 November 2026. In this, elections will be held for both the houses of Congress, House of Representatives and Senate.

Currently, the Republican Party has more seats than the Democratic Party in the US Congress, but the difference in seats between the two is very less.

If the Democratic Party comes into majority by winning more seats, then it can try to stop Trump’s decisions. It can also investigate the functioning of the Trump government.
